Most people get this without saying. The really good managers find a way to include the grunts in more strategic meetings on mute or give visibility to the overall impact of the grunt work to the project. Try and assign some low risk non grunt work that will mix it up atleast a little.
This aids motivation compared to saying you are doing the shitty work that I don’t want to do and doesn’t really add value because I’m more experienced — thats just demeaning/demoralising.
We’re associates (and paid as such) not your secretary/PA. Even a 90-10 mix makes a significant difference in motivating people compared to a 100-0 mix.
Lol. Humility check for you OP

Waiting for a PPMD to come and humility check SM1 lmao
Thank you for your empathy- I think this is incredibly valuable and wish more people took this mindset. As someone who had to do some god-awful grunt work, here are some thoughts:
- Be upfront about expectations. The worst is if you upsell the work- we’ll likely become disappointed
- Focus on building a relationship. The more you can make this project enjoyable, the more they’ll put up with the work, and the less work you have to redo. I had a consultant who, for really shitty tasks, split up the grunt work and stayed up late with me. This made me feel that we were on the same team and made me feel more motivated
- Really understand their personal goals, and think about how to tailor the work to their goals. This might mean re-framing the work to focus on having great feedback/career conversations. Ex. If I had someone regularly give me coaching on public speaking, I honestly wouldn’t care how shitty the work is
Just some thoughts, feel free to reply with questions!
