We continue to underbid and understaff many of our projects and as a result overwork our staff to keep our delivery on time and budget. I get it, we need to get our foot in the door and beat our competitors. How do we avoid this situation and still stay in the game ?

Hi! I just graduated college in December and have been working as analyst at a small boutique recruiting firm for less than a year. In the time I have been with the company it has become clear that the team is over worked, stressed, and unhappy. The people I work with are great people and it is a great team but if a whole team is unhappy how effective can we be? I don't feel like I have any authority to bring it up to our cheif of staff so what should I do?

I'm thinking about applying for 2 new bars because I will or want to have business in those states. I don't want to appear pro hac for different reasons mostly I have enough business. What are my concerns with becoming a member of 3 bars besides dues? Looks like CLE's will likely overlap. So it's just the application.

I’m very interested in trying to find my way in to government relations work. There aren’t really any options for this where I currently live, and I am about three hours from my State’s capital city. I’m also settling in with a fiancé and new house so I’m not looking to relocate. Would it be worth reaching out to govt relations firms and offering myself as a remote employee? Or maybe remote a couple days a week? Or am I not really in the position to ask without any intention of relocating?

I feel like my billable hourly rate is way too low. I know I’m only a second year at a boutique firm but for some clients I’m billed at only $175. I also have an MBA - am I crazy to think my hour should be “worth” more?

The CA Board of Examiners came out today saying they're not only proceeding with the bar exam online in October, but they're also lowering the minimum passage score permanently, whether future administrations are in-person or online.

As a CA attorney, there's some level at which this is annoying, but more than that, concerning.

Personally, I think the online exam is one thing. Although there's a chance that a good majority of people will have some little acronyms and notes written that...

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think that long-arm statutes are terrible for our system. You shouldn't be able to file in the state that you live in. As a policy matter, I feel the default should always be where the defendant lives unless the contract states otherwise.

Perhaps a spicy take: signature pages are much more substantive than people are willing to admit. You need to understand structure, authority (and whether it’s granted by the operating agreement or by resolution), local recording requirements (for us RE folks), and all sorts of other information like notice addresses that a paralegal or admin likely doesn’t have handy. Most of the time when “something as easy as signature pages” is staffed out, that person is not set us for success.
