Associate WFH decides they want to spend all of quarantine (6+ months) in another state, and starts working from their “vacation house.” Associate’s home state does not have income tax, vacation state does. Does associate owe income tax in vacation state for income “earned” in the state? Need a refresher on tax law, and I’m curious. Also just want to feel better about actually WFH like I’m supposed to and I don’t have a vacation house.

You need to look at the specific rules in that state. Usually if you spend 183+ days in a year plus a residence that’s enough for the imposition of tax in that state.

I guess so many people are doing it this year they’re just not looking

like

That is something the Associate really should want to figure out now rather than April 15, 2021, when income tax returns are filed.

And, unless the Associate is licensed to practice in both jurisdictions, they also should contact their bar association and the bar association for where their vacation home is to ensure there are no relevant bar rules in either jurisdiction that they need to be mindful of.

Any advice for monitoring employees while working from home? Our phone system works from an app in our cells and we have remote access to our files and computers. So should be business as usual but doesn’t seem so. Either they aren’t working or they aren’t being productive. Either way, looking for some ideas to keep the staff productive and accountable.

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

I went client side and am miserable - it’s madness on this side. Have made it 90 days and would prefer not to make it more than 120 - but we’re in a pandemic. Half of the problem is that I “onboarded” remote and the onboarding was TERRIBLE. The other thing is that there is no process and I’m on a team full of managers who have spent 15 years at this company and have no availability to talk to me with a day full of meetings. I’d prefer not to quit without a backup but I cry every day.

Hi All. I am a little confused what the rule is for practicing as a remote in-house counsel. For example, if my employer’s corporate office is based in Texas, but I live in Florida and work from Florida, do I have to register as in-house counsel in both states or either states. I appreciate any insights. Thanks.

Has anyone else had a really hard time online dating with Covid? I’m aware things are getting better but I prefer to do outdoor first dates to be on the safe side. No judgement to anyone that does differently. It’s just what I feel comfortable with. I’ve had a few guys tell me they won’t do outdoor dates for some reason… some have cited weather but others legit say no (in 70 weather) because it’s a hassle & “Covid is a joke.” Please tell me if this is normal.

Is it okay that I’ve been a slow junior as we’re hours away from closing? I’m trying to be proactive and available to cross things off the list but I’m SLOW: takes me long enough that they do it themselves (even though this wasn’t an issue earlier in the deal) and even on quick tasks or emails, they respond to it before I can click send. There’s also so much about closing that I don’t understand and I feel like I’m bothering the higher-ups on the team whenever I ask. *end anxiety post*
