6th year here and I still manage to feel like an idiot all the time. :) But I felt pretty confident to handle tasks with minimal supervision around my 3rd year.

I'm also a first year. The second year I work with said that he still felt very junior until I started asking him questions and he realized he knows WAY more than I do. Maybe we just need to wait for the next round of associates to start working so we can feel slightly less clueless 😅
Second year. Can confirm. I still don’t know anything and first years somehow know even less.
I think to some degree you’re always a bit clueless, because as you start to master certain things, then you’re given progressively more responsibility. So you’re always doing something you’ve never done before, no matter what your class year is. I think that’s a good thing and it means you’re progressing, if you’re confident in everything you do, then the firm isn’t challenging you and investing in your growth. (3rd year and really confident at some things and completely clueless at others)
Thanks guys, I really appreciate all of the support!! Makes me feel a ton better. Just gotta try and tough it out for a few more years I guess 😂😭
I think it starts to get better in your third year. In litigation, after 2 years you have likely been exposed to most parts of a case’s life cycle (probably not a single case—but different cases at different stages). By the time you get to third year, you are starting to do things you’ve done before.
