I get no paid vacation days or other form of guaranteed PTO. Technically, I can do whatever I want so long as I hit my hours/collections goals. Functionally, it means I can never truly take a vacation.

like

Pretty sure this is just par for the course for most firms. Ours is the same. Best advice I got was take a good vacation for your honeymoon, and set the expectation that you can and will be unavailable when you’re on vacation, at least once a year.

I give my Associates as much time off as they want. However, they still need to make sure they meet the billable requirements, and do not leave me hanging high and dry - meaning they leave with client deadlines due. My concern is making clients happy and getting work complete. I could care less about face time. If you can get free, do it!

Unlimited vacation. Get your work done and take care of the client, do what you want. Functionally this means about 3 weeks vacay a year.

like

Same.

4 weeks (incl. sick days). But, in reality, no one keeps track. If you’re hitting your hours, you can do what you want. A bit of a catch 22 if you’re hitting high hours though. Can’t remember the last time I took a full week without working (law school maybe?)

like

Same. Technically 4 weeks. But in reality no one cares if your hours are in and clients are happy. Never feels like a vacation though because you’re never truly allowed to turn off the email unless it’s a major holiday you know that no one else is working either.

like

I think anything less than 4 weeks is almost criminal. If I got unlimited, I’d probably still take 4 weeks.

like

4 weeks vacation, unlimited sick/personal time. I cannot remember a vacation where I didn’t have to do some work, though. Or a time that being truly sick didn’t get me in some kind of jam. (Or that I didn’t just work through the flu to avoid it.)

like

“Reasonable vacation time,” so no real limit, but I’ve been told most associates at my firm average 3-4 weeks a year

like

No limit, but it is hard to get away

like

We are the same - you can do whatever you want as long as you Bill and get approval from your supervising partner. Which effectively mean you could maybe get 1-2 off before asking for trouble.

like

Contingency fee firm so no hours requirement (I bill maybe 10 hours a month). Vacation is 5 days per quarter so about 20 days a year.

2 weeks!

13 days paid vacation/sick days, which everyone in my office thinks is way too low. Standard in all other jobs I’ve had is 3 weeks so not even having 2 is frustrating.

Four weeks straight out of law school. Five weeks starting your sixth year.

3 weeks, but it accrues over a year.

Technically we get 3 weeks vacation but no one keeps track and we just need to get our work done and meet our hours requirement. Last year I had an absolutely crazy first half, met my hours at the end of September, and took a bunch of vacation at the end of the year without issue.

Four weeks until you’re a fifth year, and then it’s five weeks.

DPW litigators don’t bill that much.

Unlimited. Have taken two full weeks and one half week so far this year.

We get one week of PTO after the first year with the firm.

20 days and can carry over up to 30 each year. In terms of sick time, it’s basically an honor system. We also get a vacation day back if we bill over 4 hours on a vacation day

2 weeks vacation. 6 personal/sick days. Vacation is to be preapproved to make sure things are covered while out. It goes up to 3 weeks after 5 years.

We provide 3 weeks per year to associates and 4 to partners, but partners rarely take more than 6 or 8 days a year.

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

Job offer extended but now some red flags… I was extended an offer today with a pay raise and great benefits. It’s in a field that interests me more but, now some red flags have come up. They voided my offer after asking for time off way in advance in December of this year & the pay that was discussed on the phone is different from my offer letter. I asked the recruiter to clarify and she said I must’ve not heard her correctly on the phone. I’m not having second thoughts… I was excited.

I'm hoping to eventually do CAIA, but only after I'm done with CFA. I'm also hoping to do non-financial certifications, like Certified analytics professional (CAP), and learn about web development.

While I may have the title of manager, I am still an individual contributor. The type of work I do involves quantitative analysis/data analysis/science.

Any suggestions as to what I should start with?
