This past summer, a group of our scholars made their own EP, including the writing, recording, and production all on their own. Even if it’s not my typical music genre to listen to, I’m so proud and impressed by their work. The whole reason all these firms stick to the same salary scale is to remove the salary question from the equation - otherwise the candidates’ criteria for firms become very simple: first, who pays more, then anything else a firm may have to offer. A firm that fails to match essentially removes themselves from the competition for top talent.

Yes. If a firm doesn’t pay the same salary as its peers, it better have other attractive benefits. I’d take a pay cut for lower hours (both required and expected) and better work-life balance, and that’s about it.
