Assuming from a top University, how well regarded is a masters in business analytics from a recruiting standpoint? Considering getting one over an MBA.

If both cost the same then get an MBA. Many of the business analytics stuff you can do on coursera or something and just list on your resume. My two cents

like

Masters in Business Analytics. Spells MBA to me.

funny

Recruiting for which roles, at which pay levels? A top MBA gets you access to strategy teams and MBB paying 160k base. A master of biz analytics would probably come in one level below that, and you'd be more likely to be on a dashboarding/visualization team or data management instead of strategy. But the analytics degree would open more doors for data scientist type roles, if the skillset is advanced enough.

like

That's a good point M1, I'm much more interested in viewing dashboards than making them. Perhaps naive, but my hopes are that analytics will play an increasingly larger role in strategic decision making e.g. quantifying impact and success of past decisions or estimating probability of success for future decisions.

Those data programs consistently have worse recruiting outcomes then a top MBA. That said, if you are really interested in that stuff, go with the data program and you will still have a good life. Where do you think you are more likely to excel? A top performer from a data science program who is really dedicated to their job is going to have better long run outcomes than someone who is disinterested in their MBA coursework and ends up hating their post-mba jobs.

like

That's the thing vp1! I'm personally much more interested in being able to quantify abstract and qualitative concepts or explaining why things happened. The Masters would be as much of an indulgence in my natural curiosities as it would be for my career. The MBA would be more purely for my career. After grinding it out thus far into my career, to do something that I want to do, rather than to do something I'm "supposed to" do is really compelling to me

I chose to do a specialized masters over an MBA. It all depends on what type of work you want to do. I would not do a masters in business analytics unless you want to be a data scientist for example.

helpful

Thanks D1, I hadn't thought about the viability of self learning from a recruiting perspective. The two probably cost about the same per year, except the Masters degree is only one year. so half the cost and half the foregone income.

Hi Tax Bowlers, I'm an experienced associate (2yrs) in a Big 4 Transfer Pricing division. I have reached a point in my career where I am considering taking up a professional certification. Several colleagues recommended taking up either ACCA or CFA, however, I see little connection between these certifications and the work that I am currently doing, and what I plan to do in the future. What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?

Has anyone successfully caught an associate falsifying time? I initially became suspicious because the amount of office chit chat I’ve witnessed and nature of social media postings (frequent bar trips midweek) wasn’t adding up with his alleged hours billed. I pulled his time and it’s hard to say if it’s falsified or if he’s just incompetent - and I don’t want to go to my other partners if I’m not 100% sure. But it’s hard to believe he honestly spent .8 reviewing a one page order.
