No one is ready to retire at 43, and this industry needs to shift perspectives. I’m happy I did end up getting a new ECD job I’m very excited about, but wow, it was a journey. I hope we can all find more longevity in this business. And don’t be afraid to hire veterans, they bring value!
Hey ladies, I’m a 50 yo here and worried about my current gig not being stable. So I feel you in spades. That said, I’m on the executive team so I know what goes through leaderships collective mind, and a lot of it has to do with the energy one brings to the table. I know that ageism is rampant, and the fact that we’re making more money, there are fewer senior roles are realities. But what is in our control is our ability to adapt, stay curious, ahead of the curve and modern. Regardless of the physical, I see people who bring it at 55 and others who seem like they’ve given up at 38. None of this is easy, but I do believe it can be done
It’s a mind set to grapple with. My first lay-off was at 49 and I got the best job ever literally two weeks after 50th birthday. I will say my hiring was heavy on prior connections from people who are quite loyal to each other, creatives who are way more open minded and hungry to have people with good experience than managers and opps who are threatened by seniority and just plugging slots...overall belief in experience and positivity and really good work ethic wins the day. Power on.
Went through the same thing last year, painful and gruelling. I'm over 40 but not close to ECD in my career. So my wish to you... remember it when you're hiring!
Amen. Tune it out and bring it every day. Clients want insightful work and insights come from life experience
I agree with the thoughts here. I am over 40 and I like to act like half my age. I think that if you stay hungry, passionate, bring fun into the game and maintain a growth mindset, age really is just a number. that mindset has proven to be good for my skin as well as my confidence. And if that doesn’t work - a good pair of heels and lipstick does the trick. In fact I proudly tell people my age as a badge of honor. There is a great quote for this: we don’t stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing.
The spirit and energy seem like a must. You have to believe in the value you are bringing. If you don’t, who will?
Great point in believing in your worth and value. I have to constantly remind myself of my badassery and that my circumstances do not define me; not my innate talent, intellect or contribution. Further, I have to constantly be vigilant against self pity, depression and catastrostrophizing. All that said, I do NOT let anyone know my age, and I so want to not give a fig. I would love to come out of the age closet:/
I changed careers at 36 and interned at a big agency. I got hired right after by an amazing female CD who said she “wanted an adult for the role.” I feel so lucky to be in the game and not be passed over. Super curious about what’s next though (notice I didn’t say “scared”)!
I got let go at 50 and I think it’s all over for me. And I can’t retire now.
You can do it! I’ve seen a few of my ECD and CD friends go through some intense layoffs and career changes. Freelancing to fill the gap has helped them to keep their confidence up and pay the bills, or find a love for the lifestyle that freelancing can offer and never look back!
