At MBB and feeling like a huge loser. On my project and every time I feel like I’m ahead, I’m actually not. Drilled constantly w/o much top cover but then told I’m being too detailed. Any advice?

That’s hard OP and sorry you’re going through this. The best advice someone gave me was to focus on the positive of feedback and try to get real actions from the person giving it. If you trust the person and feel they have good intentions then try to ask them if they can help. Get them to whiteboard with you or show you how they would have done the work. If it’s too detailed then ask them if they can rewrite some of it with you live so you can understand the logic. I do feel that at least the principals and project leaders at BCG are well intentioned but sometimes we throw feedback over the wall and don’t wait to see if it sticks. The associates and consultants may be feeling bad about the feedback and they don’t ask questions in the moment. So then all that is left is the negative feeling. I always encourage my mentees to try and get clarity on what good looks like so they know how to do it next time. I think most people we hire are capable of doing the job but there’s a figure it out yourself aspect that is challenging to many. Learning to learn is a big part of this job - at all levels, even partner - so think of it as practice.

(Cont.) I don’t get what I should be doing to be on track more than I already am. And as soon as I get to celebrating a win, mud is slung or I’m told that this victory doesn’t mean much

Feel for you OP, it’ll get better. To help you ... need to know a few things : How long in role? Is this just the current project or you feel this way on all projects? What’s the actual feedback you’re getting from your manager? What your areas for improvement?

Happy to help any time - you can direct message me if you need more tips. You’re in the thick of it, drinking from the fire hose - you’ll get through it ! 🙌🏼 I remember describing my first 6 months at BCG to a friend as “running after a train that is always going faster than you” ... but you make it through, hopefully with the help of good managers that can coach you through it. I was so lucky to have that - now I’m a Principal 🤯

Crossposting from Immigration Attorneys: I’ve been practicing for 4 years, but new to the immigration practice. I recently submitted an I-129 for 15 H-2B landscape workers. I knew the deadline to beat the cap count would be close, but I convinced the client that we could take the chance. Unfortunately, the cap count was reached after we submitted, so no approval. Is there any other avenue to bring over those workers or is he screwed?

I launched the project, I met the tight deadline and on top of that i have a better relationship with the client that my coworker, bc the client reached out directly to me to take over . I have my 1:1 with my manager tomorrow and will bring this up, but any advice how to best address this? I don’t want him to make this a “oh this is how you feel” thing- thanks

Looking for advice. I am new to the firm and on my second engagement. The manager that I am working with is the most negative person that I've ever met; he constantly complains about the firm, the project, clients etc and never appreciates any efforts. I realized I spent so much internal energy to elevate the mood (it's only 2 of us in this engagement) and this started taking a toll on me. I am also worried that he will give a negative feedback on me as this is his behavioural pattern.
