At the point where I just want to quit my job without having another one secured. I’m so burnt out and my mental health is really starting to suffer from the bad situation I’m in at my job.

OP - Hopefully this can give you some piece of mind. I was let go almost one year ago. All I did to deserve this was grow a business into the agency’s largest and afterwards constantly struggle with its growing pains and holding company red tape associated with operations, skills/training and the staffing of talent. But what I realized was that I was just so worn down by it that everyday became a struggle. As the nature of leadership changed, I no longer fit into the place and felt completely unvalued. I was so burned out that I couldn’t motivate my way through another defeating day. I needed a sabbatical in the worst way and the agency provided me an involuntary one. Though I was angered by the insensitivity of the action, I’m better for it. The break has made me more confident, curious and creative. I am more me than I was in those darker days. Vacations are great but a sabbatical is what really recharges your battery and I’ve been surprised (not really, though) that agencies do not more frequently consider providing unpaid leave for just that purpose. I’m now reenergized and working at my own pace, feel valued, know I am valued and making ends meet. Granted I had the benefit of some severance, but I had also saved for just this eventuality. If you are feeling the same and have the means I would strongly consider it. Choose your own well-being over a situation that only will continue to cause you misery if you do not believe you can affect change for the better. Wishing you the best in whatever you choose.

Like Strategist 2, I quit my job 5 months ago (not because of burnout, but because I didn’t believe in the agency model anymore), and I’ve done well financially and have never been happier. I don’t understand the ‘stress of unemployment’ comments, we live in the age of the internet where you can literally do anything and turn it into a revenue stream. Yes, it will take some time and lots of hard work to set yourself up / get yourself clients, etc. but if you know and believe in your work you’ll always be able to use your skill set to make money (or channel a hobby). Once you get into a groove with that it’ll most likely be more lucrative and you get to call your own shots. Running your own business long term is not for everyone, but don’t think just because you quit your job with nothing lined up it means all the sudden you can’t go out and make money. It means you will make money in your own creative ways, and look for another full time gig / take a break with your free time if having a salaried job is what you want.

I’ve been full time freelance for 15 years and am working on 2 digital products. I can not confirm “you can literally do anything and turn it into a revenue stream online”. You can do great... or work for 6 months on a product and get 1 sale for $200.

I feel you, but as someone who’s been laid off, let me tell you the stress of being out of work is far more damaging to one’s mental health. Take a vacation and recharge.

likeupliftinghelpful

Thx! 🙃 So true, right?!

PREACH. I’m in the same position and hoping to get an offer letter soon. Hang in there. You don’t want to add money problems to your already stressful situation.

Digital Strategist speaks the truth. If you think you are feeling stress now, try waking up without a job - and knowing that you quit the one you had. Hang in there until you have a firm offer..

OP, happy to chat with you privately about how you can mitigate this with medical leave.

Such a good idea.

in a lot of cases "burn out" is just a softer way of saying "stress induced nervous breakdown"

I left my job last year without another one lined up and it felt great, but the search was definitely stressful. Just a different kind of stress. It’s you versus the clock/your bank account as opposed to you versus your job. So just be prepared for another stressful period following your two weeks notice. It’s best if you commit yourself emotionally, mentally, and financially to being out of work for a certain period of time. I.e. tell yourself you’ll be unemployed for three months and prepare for it so that you feel okay about it when it happens rather than scrambling. But most of all, trust your gut! ❤️

Trust your body and your sense of situation. I walked out on a job for the first time ever last year, and it was the highest paid job I ever had. I was working Monday through Sunday. sometimes taking my computer to the hair salon and doctors appointments! I was not sleeping, had constant sharp headaches and at some point a doctor thought I punctured my carotid artery -turned out I really needed to sleep. on top of that, I had a miserable manager and when that person started harassing me on email, in person and interviewing behind my back, I decided it was time to quit. I tried to look and interview while eemployed but was too underwater to convey energy & enthusiasm. I couldnt take meaningful time off because of one high priority after another. I found myself calling off sick every week. after MONTHS of discussing with my husband, my siblings, and my close friends, I decided I rather be unemployed than dead on the job. I barely made my 1 yr anniversary there...

likesmarthelpful

Either way you will be fine. I felt the same way and fantasized about quitting. I actually ended up getting let go during the search and while it was unexpected and stressful, it was also a blessing. I’d definitely take senior strat1 up on that offer.

Everybody feels this way. But I hear freelance is pretty bleak, and word is theres a recession on the way—and advertising always gets the chop first. Youll just have to trust me that Im not normally so conservative, BUT it seems like an abnormally bad time to quit without a job lined up.

Take time off. Try meditation in a group setting. Group therapy or individual. Journal your feelings on paper before you go to bed. It all sounds like work but it’s self-centered (the good kind) that rebuilds you. It’s critical and more important than anything.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy really helped me work through epic toxic situations and gave me actionable ways to keep myself sane. I couldn’t quit for financial reasons, but I had health insurance. Make your mental health a priority. In the meantime, the first book I recod is great. Another one that has helped me is: No Hard Feelings - the secret power of embracing your emotions at work.

I quit my job 6 months ago with nothing lined up and I also couldn’t be happier. Being in limbo while you’re trying to decide to quit or stay is actually the worst part. If/when you quit stay tight with your network and you’ll start to notice new doors opening and things clicking into place. Not to mention, quitting was the best thing I could have done for my mental health, physical health, relationships and friendships. DM me if you need any advice ❤️

having been through many of the experiences and cycles described here, I just want to say how validating and positive to know others have tread these paths as well, and are reaching out with grounded, thoughtful guidance, not just alpha dog/boot strap bullshit. I've felt so alone, scared, worthless, tossed-upon-the-scrap-heap at numerous times in my career. real professional dead end type feels like the OP. seeing the words of others who have been through similar cycles is one of the reasons I still revisit this bowl even though I'm in a much better place right now. Godspeed to you all anonymous kindred spirits, Godspeed to you all.

Always keep a healthy balance in your bank acct so in moments like this you can walk away. Sell off or giveaway all your non-essential possessions. Go travel the world. Seek freelance gigs along the way. You’ll discover paths you never imagined. But you really do have to break out of this ridiculous American trap of working your entire life for a two week vacation to Florida every year.

Why don’t you ask for a sabbatical. Sometimes you just need some distance. When you’re back, you’ll know you need to leave for good or not. I did that - so burnt out and came back refreshed.

It's not worth it. I put the shop before myself and all it did was end up hurting the people that are most important; yourself and your loved ones. I regret it so much. I spilled my guts with managers and took a doctor mandated 2 week's break. The day after I submitted the paperwork saying I was medically cleared to return the agency set up a meeting in return-to-duty wrapping paper. Yeah, turns out my "return-to-work" was actually my pink slip. You'll want to keep the severity of this on the down-low and line up your resources, references, anything book worthy well before you jump, take a break, or snap entirely. You're going to need some time out of the spin, but be strategic and don't pull the pin too fast or you'll end up unprepared and on your ass. Respectfully, - Guy who burned out

Wow I feel so validated hearing I’m not the only one. I’ve been at my job for almost 4 years and have seen 3 CEOs and a revolving door with creative directors amongst other people. Recently a new CCO came on board and hired her own people. She is one of the most abrasive and toxic leaders I’ve seen and has no respect or appreciation for the hard workers here. She only wants to build her own team and push us all out. I got severely burned out as well. These toxic people were terrible to me. I developed a heart condition for the stress and was able to get a 4 week medical leave. During that time I took a soul vacation at joshua tree where I really reconnected back to myself. I also made sure to gather my portfolio and start applying. When I returned I could see the toxicity here only got worse. Luckily one of those jobs worked out and I signed the offer letter last week and am luckily getting out of here. I encourage anyone going thru a similar experience to TAKE a leave. A sabbatical. Whatever you can do. Not just a weekend or a week. But at least long enough time to recenter and recharge. Don’t let it start to affect your body in a physical way like what happened to me. Listen to your instincts. You are not alone!!!!!

I’m legit in the same boat right now. Literally today after I got out of work I call a friend and wanted to cry cause of how much I wanna quit my job, but can’t because I don’t have another one lined up. 😞 Hope things end up working out for the both of us sooner than later.

I’m struggling mentally and it’s affecting my performance at work. I’d like to let my manager know, both to protect myself if/when I fail massively and for support. However, I’m concerned she might be unsympathetic since mental health is personal. What’s the best way to frame this to a manager? For reference, I’m considered a high performer and have more direct reports than anyone at my level…but I feel it slipping away quickly and am concerned I’ll burn a bridge before ringing the alarm.

Started a new job a couple of months ago in a relatively smaller organization. I’ve received no formal training, don’t know much about the product, and despite voicing my eagerness to learn to my manager, I haven’t received much support. This is affecting my mental health pretty badly and I am strongly considering leaving. It’s only been 4 months for me in this job so I feel ashamed of wanting to quit so early. Any words of advice? Am I making a mistake?
