Public sector unions are all bad. There’s no check on them because there is no realistic option the government can do if they strike other than give them everything they want and then some. This enables them to abuse their power by getting more pay than they deserve, protecting bad/abusive employees, and anything else they want. Public sector unions are scared to death of anything that threatens their stranglehold on the government, such as private schools for the teachers’ union. Personally, I think all unions are bad, but I can see a case for them in specific private markets.

Police unions seem to prevent important accountability. They’re very strong for the police to the detriment of the public.
Teachers unions that I see are very bureaucratic, and don’t do all they need to to support the teachers. Instead, there is a sense of self preservation.

On the fence about it. It's a slippery slope to destroy these organizations. But they are clearly misused.

A clear next step however would be to remove their ability to negotiate around accountability, transparency or misbehavior of members.

After that, we will need to do a detailed study to figure out how much harm they are sctuslly doing.

Unions are not inherently bad. Nurses and teachers unions for example. I think they’re an important advocate for the labor force. I do think their roles should only be limited to salary and benefit negotiations.

However, when they enact policies that hide bad behavior, protect bad staff, and are not transparent in their operations, then yes that’s when it’s time for the union’s power to be curbed.

Teachers and nurses unions are not good.

Like anything, it's about power balance. Unions are there so corporations don't have too much power, and we've frequently seen what happens when they do.

But things are also bad when the unions have too much power

100% against them. Partially/mostly against other public sector unions.

Police unions make it nearly impossible to fire bad cops and incentivize protecting them to protect the power of the union. A police union is not a labor union; police officers are powerful state agents, not exploited workers.

Nurses are often not public workers, so a union makes sense.

I’ve been on my job 16 years and been in a very toxic work environment over 3 years now. I find that some unions make things hard just to do it. I am very burned out and tired of a toxic work environment. Is private sector a bit different? I've considered that!

So as much as I embrace the tenets of socialism, I have to admit: I'm not a part of a union. I don't know of any programmer's union and I don't know where to start if I want to organize in my own company.

If anyone has any pointers, I'd love some guidance. Also guidance in convincing my coworkers to organize, which might be a hard sell because most of us are pretty happy with our working conditions and pay as far as I can tell.

Hello I want to transition into a role of customer engagement manager - can make over 100k per year. WFH highly preferred.
I have a masters in healthcare admin. I’m currently a client care manager (basically a case manager) for an unskilled homecare agency managing 1100 service hours and over 70 active caregivers. My goal from the beginning has been to move up in healthcare in some capacity, but if I can transition into this role outside of healthcare I would be open. Any advice?
