Thinking about saving up to buy a house but I love living in a nice apartment. Is that normal? My rent is probably more than a mortgage in my area but I’m scared to look at 15-30 years of monthly payments (I mean im not sure if I want to move every couple of years etc)
That's how I feel and I live in Arlington.
25 Chicago - duplex loft in Ravenswood. Sold it for about $50k more than we bought it about 2 years later. Been moving to better and better places ever since. So it really helps to do this early and use it as a way to continually save, as well as leverage as an investment often
25 in SF unable to afford anything
I feel like the ticket is either through stock (ESPP or equity) or a sales role with a big bonus/commission year. Trying to put away cash from every check in a high COL city is nearly impossible
Mid 40s. Bought a 3 bedroom condo in Scranton, PA. Johnny Depp actually lives in the complex
Where are all the hot people?
How the F are people buying houses in their 20s? Are you all 50+ years old now or something?
A few ways...first, I moved back home after college. Saved $15k/ year to afford 20% down payment on first place. Lived well within my means to save 20% down on second place. 3rd place, I needed some help from my parents to get to 25% down payment (investment property) but also had been promoted several times between 2011 and 2015 so my income went up allowing me to qualify. No debt from college, used company tuition assistance to keep MBA costs down, any money from tax returns or bonuses went straight into savings. Some penny pinching and longer drives while my friends were all living in Arlington, VA or DC allowed me to be in the position I’m in
34 NC so excited!!! But had been in limbo for so long and in such high cost of living areas, now I’m building my dream home with my dream man!! 😍
Give him some time. Won’t be dreamy for long
25, a one bedroom condo
It was just answering the question posed by the OP. Definitely not showing off. For me the purchase was the right financial thing for me at the time. It was cheaper to pay mortgage than to pay rent.
I also splurged and bought myself a plasma screen tv
THAT IS A 200 DOLLAR PLASMA SCREEN TV!!!!
29, outside of Seattle and thankfully before prices shot up
34..Chicago..closed it last week
23 Orlando
30 ATL
25, MD three level townhouse
Either great at saving or didn’t have student loans. Either way kudos to you!
21, ATL
Yep it’s already worth 70k more than what I bought it for. God is good🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I’m 26, living in DC, and dreaming of buying a condo soon. Saving up my coins!
I hope they’re rare coins
Buying a house? In this economy!? Seriously though in the DC metro where I live if you can buy a house, you're getting paid really well and also have no debt. I can barely afford renting a one bedroom apartment in this area after all of my bills.
You sound very self deprecating, SD1. Facts are key. You don’t have any on your side. Housing in cities has increased at much higher rates than salaries for too long to conclude anything than what i said earlier.
25 in ATL. Closing next week!
South Decatur
19, Rowlett. Sales people would ask if my parents were home and I said “No” and shut the door.
Texas ... outside of Dallas
5 years ago at 28 I house hacked and bought a duplex with 5% down. I lived mortgage free with the rent from the other unit. I’ve repeated the same method 2 more times and own 2 duplexes and a 4-plex now
What city?
24 London
Used to live in the UK, now in the US. Got my foot on the ladder reasonably early which has worked out well. My advice is if you can afford it then do it. Even if you think you may be stretched a LITTLE then do it but try and get a nest egg for those rainy days which will surely come
25 northern va. Own 11 houses now at 33. Love cheap debt
I own 4 in NOVA. The rest in different states
