As a female: never. We go from too young to too old in a matter of weeks. Because of this we are never ‘just right’ thus we are seldom respected in this industry. The only women I know who have achieved something appearing to be respect are the ones that are feared.
It’s common for young women in the industry to confuse interest and niceties for respect. I know I thought I was being respected in my thirties. Then you hit 40 and the minute you are no longer traditionally attractive aka are unfuckable but more awarded, knowledgeable and qualified, you realize what you experienced wasnt actually respect. Because if it was, then it wouldn’t evaporate once we have achieved true mastery, are at our most accomplished and when we have earned the leadership role. Men are considered at their peak of accomplishment, respectability and worth in their 50s. Look around your agency and count the number of women over 40. Then let’s talk about how woman are “respected” for their accomplishments in this industry.
A few weeks ago when I moved to an in-house team from an agency. It was genuinely startling that they simply assumed that I knew what I was doing and they deferred to me from day 1. Made me realize exactly how disrespectful everyone at the agency had been.
This. I’ve had the same experience. It really laid bare just how discriminatory agency culture really is. It also pissed me off that I’d settled for that treatment for so many years thinking it was normal or my fault.
30.... also when I started making enough to not need to scrounge for free food... cough cough
35-40
Around 30, once I moved from the agency ‘I grew up at’ and reached director level. But that doesn’t mean I’ve had to stop fighting for it
I’m 29 and i feel like my baby face makes it impossible to be respected.
A couple of weeks ago I was chatting with the HR manager at my agency and she threw me the “wow, I’m impressed you know so much about your profession”
🙄
31
It varied depending on who I was talking to, but I got a quorum at 30 in London and at 40 in NYC.
Still working on it. 31.
I'm 25 and began feeling it this year.
