At what age did your parents retire / do you want them to retire? My mom already retired at 62 but my dad is still working at 66 and I don't feel good about it.

My dad retired as a brick layer at 65 and by the time he was 70 he aged 20 years. So he started laying brick again on the weekends for my older brother’s residential business. He’s 82 now and still lays brick faster than any of the younger guys on the wall. My mother passed away 20 years ago and many of his friends have passed. I’m not even remotely concerned that he’s still working, it keeps his health and sanity.

I expect I’ll be working well into my 70s, though not in consulting. My current fantasy is to retire from consulting at 60 and then work at a specialty grocery store and provide shopping advice to customers (“oh, that’s fennel. You can roast it with chicken or slice it thin with a mandolin and mix it with raw arugula and parmesan for a nice salad. A mandolin? It’s a kitchen tool - here, let me show you, we have some over here….”). You have to have SOMETHING to do, other than wait for your grandkids to call.

It depends on WHY haven't they retired. If they desire to keep working and it gives them purpose great for them! If they want to but can't; that's harder.

like

Why do you don't you feel good about it? My dad was at least 65 when he retired. My last landlord retired twice and was working again at 75.

like

When people straight up retire without a plan their cognitive health suffers substantially.

Why is this a problem? If he enjoys working and finds it fulfilling, it’s good for him to keep working. I’ve seen too many men struggle to find their purpose after retirement and their health and mental state take a nosedive. Not everyone views working as a bad thing.

My dad is still working at 74

My dad will probably go into a deep depression if he’s not working. He plans to work until about 70 but will need to do something part time because he loves routine and doing something.

like

Agreed. A family friend of ours is in his mid 80s and he has a part time job. He works early mornings and is back by 12pm for his mid day nap. He loves the routine!

My dad was working until last year, at 74. Then when COVID hit, his employer took the opportunity to trim staff. I’m glad they did though.

like

Unfortunately not. He was a contract/shift worker.

My dad is a retired journalist and worked until 67. He’s still freelancing with his old newspaper now that he’s turning 71 this year. He really loves his job so I think it’s a great way for him to stay active

As long as he wears his mask I wouldn’t worry

Parents have retired but both have PT jobs to keep busy/active/mentally stimulated and out of each other’s hair for a few hours a week. It seems to work well. Full, true retirement seems rare in my experience - whether the person wants or needs to keep working.

Both my parents retired the day they turned 60 and have never been happier.

Retired at 40. Had a small biz to keep themselves busy

Why don’t you feel good about it? In China retirement is 55 and 60 and people don’t want to retire

My mom retired at 58 and my dad is semi working at 62. I absolutely love it for them. They are traveling and enjoying life. I hope to be able to do the same

My dad is planning to work at Home Depot for the morning shift after he retires. He wants to work 5-9a-ish, 3-5 days a week, so he can keep active , and bring my mom breakfast in the morning since she sleeps in ❤️

I don't know if that will actually work out, but that's his plan:)

My dad is a master electrician still working long hours, to my mom’s dismay. They’ll be 78 this year. My dad gets his battery charged by working and problem-solving so anytime I’ve asked about his retirement plans he gets quite affronted. My mom definitely needs something to do though besides wait for dad to get home!

New to investing, but want to make sure I'm doing this correctly. I've maxed out my 401K and am looking to open an IRA. I know everyone recommends backdooring this into a Roth IRA, but if my plan is to move/retire to a state with no state income tax, wouldn't traditional make more sense? Or am I overthinking this? Also, if I go the backdoor route, how do I make sure I don't get taxed again, when i convert to a Roth? Thanks in advance!

Hi y’all. So I haven’t technically onboarded for my firm yet, I’m suppose to start in 3 weeks. One of the projects I’m going to be put on requested to have a little interview with people of the team so I had mine today. The “interviewer” didn’t really seem to think I was qualified for this project at the end of the conversation (agree to disagree with him on that). Regardless, am I in trouble for not fitting his criteria/selling myself enough…kinda worried on my manager’s response….

Has anyone ever requested a weekend interview for a PE or credit fund shop? Are people amenable to that?
