That’s because they have an actual skill beyond slide engineering

My first job was as a welder in my grandparents shop. I was 15. I could probably make 100k welding right now. I borrowed way too much money to go to ungrad and get my masters. Don’t regret it as all (though I would have been more frugal with the borrowing if not 19-20 with no options.) You guys are actually completely missing why what we have is better. We work in offices. When it snows we work from home. We don’t get burned or scraped or cut just doing our daily activities. Most of you probably haven’t done blue collar work, so you just compare hours to hours. Blue collar hours are usually pretty rough if you’re actually working

Skilled labor was demonized by the “everyone has to go to college” group. If they continue to improve, save for retirement, become masters (electrician, plumbing, etc), open their own companies they can make crazzzyyy bank. Just like people in our positions, if you continue to innovate you can far exceed the $$ and the debt. Not that this answers your question, but emphasizing innovation and continued improvement will lead to you getting the ROI you desire.

Agree w/D1. Making slides sounds pretty appealing compared to cleaning up a burst sewage pipe in a stranger’s house, regardless of the $/hr.

Every high schooler should work construction for a summer. Gives you great perspective.

like

Op how do you have a job? Clearly you cannot do basic financial calculations. Just open excel and discount those cash flows. Don’t forget their ROI depends on you assuming they have a giant opportunity cost i.e. anyone can become a high skilled tradesperson. If all you want is an answer to your question, then mine is figure it out yourself.

like

Idk much about these construction job comps, but I’m guessing your friends’ pay will plateau and probably be below <$150k for the rest of their lives. Over the long term, especially in consulting, as you have seen in comp threads, you have the ability to go far beyond that.

like

I mean I love what I do but still it sucks to have so much debt and working crazy hours while also getting paid less

like

BCG1 but slide engineering is still engineering ;)

Settle down OP, “our job” is not to answer your questions. I’ll interpret your question and respond however I damn well please :)

like

OP, clearly you had the answer you wanted worked out before you asked and are now annoyed the 🐠 aren’t validating you. What do you want us to say? Ya we all fucked up and are gonna quit and learn to plumb? If you wanna learn a trade go and do it - quit taking your anger out on randos online.

From someone who has worked/hustled since I was 14 and took out student/cc debt for college, it started paying off for me when my first job paid more than double the median income in the city where I grew up. It’ll really payoff in 1.5 years when I’m completely debt free, and hopefully by the time I’m 30 i can own a rental property!

Union trades are going to be capped on the upside, but like P1 says they have the option of starting their own companies to make more.

like

I got around this whole trade off by going to a less prestigious school that was willing to give me a full ride, work my ass off and still get into consulting. I assume this means that I start ahead of my peers and will continue to outpace if I make the right moves

D1 if I wanted to do all the work I wouldn’t have asked the question on here now would I? Is that what you do at work just recreate things over and over? No, you check to see if someone has done it already, so you can leverage that information. D2 which is why I’m saying you have poor interpretation skills hence I don’t understand why you have a job. LMAO

like

OP, you must be new to this whole thing. You need a lot of EQ work and focus on communication. Answer to your question: started paying off in 3 years 17 days and 5 hours after graduate school graduation. Hope that helps.

I made 40/hr cutting lawns in high school with a commercial lawn mower. I’d probably have several trucks by now making a lot more than I ever did in consulting. I could go back to school and become a high end car mechanic and earn about the same as I do now fairly quickly. Sitting behind a computer making slides isn’t the only way to make money.

like

Good point D3...I think there is something deeper at play here in OPs psyche. Do you feel like you made the wrong move in consulting? The good thing is you can go virtually anywhere from consulting. Calm down, do some introspection, and figure out your next move. Me, I'm headed into either industry or real estate for a bit. ✌️

Also, let’s not forget that often benefits at our companies are far better than most companies and even in a recession most of us have such broad and in demand skill sets that we’ll quickly find a new job whereas construction and other fields struggle more.

I'm one of 3 learning strategists at my school. However, I'm the MAIN strategist that cover for absent teachers. I just finished taking over a grade until it was filled with a new teacher. A few years ago most IT job listing were looking for people with "Unicorn" Skills. They were even looking for people with 10YOE for a technology that was out for 5 years. It seems that there are many more openings than a few years ago probably also due to the fact that "remote" work is more than 30%. Is this sellers(candidate) or a buyers(company) market? Thoughts?
