When you don't know the hiring manager so your resume doesn't make it past the HR filter listed as 'mandatory'

When they want to pay a lot less? Diversity goals? Maybe they have more new technology knowledge more drive? They know someone you don’t? Second guessing hiring decisions causes too much brain damage. I have seen some interesting ones.

Too broad a question.

To take the premise to the extreme, I’ll take a freshly certified NASA Astronaut over a 35 year veteran Aeronautical Engineer to do EVA or pilot a new spacecraft… though that’s an imperfect example since both of these are veteran professionals.

In cybersecurity, there are lots of people who’ve been doing good work for decades but who, resting on their laurels, aren’t keeping up with the latest developments in the field.

This doesn’t negate the value of the 35 year vet in, say, leading compliance efforts… but does mean that a fresh arrival to the scene, hungry to do a good job, is going to do a better tactical job of defending against modern threats.

In the military, the up or out nature of promotions and the uncompetitive compensation at mid-career mark (particularly for enlisted specialists but also true for commissioned generalists) means that more often than not, the 35-year vets who make it to flag officer rank aren’t the highest-performing or most innovative dudes.

A group of 100 randomly-selected E-5s and O-3s are more likely to deliver strategic, operational, and tactical victories than a group of 100 randomly-selected generals or admirals. (Evidence: the last few wars) 🤷

Lol yeah probably not much industry knowledge that the fresh grad brings that the 35 year vet doesn’t in that case.

I could see an argument for say an MBA from an elite program having some fresh perspectives and being more data driven than others might be…

If it’s a mandatory minimum requirement in the job description and you’re competing blindly online with others who have it

It’s all about networking these days. I think if you have kept up on licensing, certs, trainings, etc. it is helpful. Keep in mind it’s all done by computers now, so these systems search for certain terminology and spit out a select few. It’s stupid because the soft skills someone with that experience has are harder to come by than the hard skills, which can be taught. In the end you have abilities you can’t find these days and you can’t even train someone to learn these traits days.

I generally feel as though I understand a transaction timeline & am appreciative of the opportunity/ challenge but any tips/ considerations/ things I may overlook would be appreciated.

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Hello everyone!
I’m currently working as an Optimization Associate, which in my company is a step above a project manager. Our team didn’t have a scope for the majority of my tenure, so I was practically doing E2E PM & process improvement for multiple teams. I’ve asked for an off-cycle salary increase (35%) because I’ve been performing at a higher level than my job entails far before my promotion to the role and I’m currently excelling. How likely would the company accept it?

I just recently promoted to HR assistant manager. I have my PHR and working towards my SPHR. I am the lowest paid employee in the depth. We have a senior specialist and a general specialist both make more than I do. They have been employed longer with the company. What is your advice on this issue?

I just received an email from the company inviting me to permanently join - currently I work as a contractor and they’re inviting to join the team - the proposal is less than I make it as a contractor ( considering that I won’t be able to do overtime - and I do a lot - I’ll make 15% less than I’m making now). Also both amounts seems low compared to the industry. Any advice? Thank you!

Over 20 plus years with this company my base pay has gone up every couple of years. The biggest growth in my salary has come as a "Bonus pd 1x/yr" which now is over 50% of my cash compensation. Base plus bonus plus benefits is on the Lower half of my industry Salary Value from talking to industry colleagues.

I may have an opportunity for a new position with another company starting around the first of the new year. My concern is that the "bonus" is not paid until March. What to do?

I'm interviewing with 4 companies and find it odd that only two of them brought up comp early in the process while the other two haven't asked once about my salary expectations even after multiple interviews. Is this pretty typical? I have been recruited to my last several roles and this is my first time ever interviewing with multiple companies at once.

I received an offer for a role that is a lot more money than I thought but I still want to negotiate and see how much more money I can get. What can I say if the salary is already above average for the role in the market and city I live in?

I work at a privately insured addiction treatment facility. My hourly wage is $20/hr. I wanted to move up in position with this company but they already had someone in that position currently. I went to them with a solution that would resolve a couple issues within the current staff and put me into a higher position/supervisor role. They agreed that having me in this role would solve the issues and also that I would be able to handle the responsibility that comes with it. They only gave me $2/hr

Which strategy is better?

#1 - The first tactic I learned for salary negotiation is to give them a # and act like you will walk away if it's not met. I forget the details, but something like even if they give you a lower #, you still stick to your #.

#2 - You can also give them a # and they may come back with a lower # and you can take it or leave it.

#3 - A new coach told me about giving a range. He said if you give them a #, they may flat out say no.

Can't they say no to any of these?
