If you’re an undergrad hire who was promoted to post mba position (e.g., consultant at BCG) it’s fine, you’d recruit as normal. As an EM/PL/CTL or manager it’s tougher. Either need to take a step back to associate (have seen multiple McK BA to EM do this) or it’s at a very small fund (have seen some EM exit to small VC funds as VP).
For ops teams you can go at any level
If you want to be part of the investment team, I would say earlier the better. As a BA, maybe you have a 10% chance. As an Associate, maybe 3-5%, EM like 1-2%. To what an person said earlier, even Associate/EM exits are due to them being BA rather than doing an MBA. It also depends on the fund (size) and whether there are any sector expertise (like PhD or MD for healthcare fund)
BTW, if you want to move over in operations then it doesn’t matter.
I don't know what a manager makes but PE associates get $250-$300 starting. Without deal experience / investing, previous titles mean very little in the industry.
