After 5 years of experience Senior Producing, running accounts, mentoring younger producers, proving their ability to handle clients and key decision makers at an elevated level. Not just because you think you can “do the same work as the EPs”. Executive Producing goes well beyond just the ability to produce a job.
Generally in this business you have to do the work before you get the promotion. I’ve seen it time and time again in my 17 years across disciplines. Do the work and get the bump. Or don’t get the bump and quit, telling the next place, “I’ve been doing EP level work for the past year, but my current agency doesn’t have a place for me at that level. That’s why I’m here now."
It took me 18 months. My last year as SP was really an EP at the SP rate. I owned a team of five and oversaw $4 Million in business. I was expected to act like leadership, not just a producer. I knew I was being “taken advantage” of but I liked the autonomy of not rolling up to a manager. I knew my next title would be EP.

Agree with SP2. Once you have some experience doing more than just producing and have built strong relationships with creative/account leadership. You may have to speak up and make it clear you want to be on a path to be an EP. Many people don’t want that and are happy being Seniors and just running their projects. Management often doesn’t know the difference if you don’t speak up.
