At what point to you get tired of micro aggressive behaviour and start calling people out on it? I’m a black female in the UK and it’s exhausting!!!

You should call it out immediately. It’s exhausting everywhere because it’s unwarranted and counterproductive. We must get the courage to speak up immediately either to the person or your manager/hr

likehelpful

I’ve become more comfortable with calling things out after years of sitting with the discomfort. I just did today and feel great, actually!

Do you have any examples? I think specific situations require different approaches.

For reference, I’m an American, white woman in Germany

like

As a white male, I don’t think I act in any micro aggressions, but for all I know, I could be all the time. If it effects you, speak up. Maybe someone needs to see a perspective different than their own, and they could simply be ignorant. If they are not ignorant, I believe they need to be set in place. I’ve grown a lot over the years and my understand of my prior ignorance is astounding and embarrassing. Whether they like it or not, you speaking up helps everyone.

like

I’m always trying to grow. As far as not speaking, I’ll never align with ANY group being silenced in any conversation. Free speech is the necessary foundation to any free society and civil discourse creates understanding, empathy, and positive change.

The OP gives me information to ponder and I reserve the right to respond to in support. I won’t be silenced because of my skin color.

You too can keep growing.

I’ve been struggling with a partner who is very hard to reach when there are items that need their sign-off asap. I have to send multiple follow-up emails and calls to get a response. Perhaps they expect me to handle things more independently, but I am a recent lateral (3rd year) and don’t want the partner to blame me for not checking with them first. Ideally, I want to take on less work from them (central staffing) and do more for other partners. Any advice/how would you handle this situation?

What do you do with a Staff with ~1 year exp that legit won’t work. For example, you give them a simple task at 10am that should take 3 hours max, they ignore your check-in messages and then ask if they can give it you in the morning. They never ask questions. Morning comes and they still didn’t do it. When they finally do it, it is riddled with errors and clearly shows they didn’t try. A peer leaves the firm you work in and sends a goodbye email to everyone. You respond back by writing a thoughtful email back wishing them all the best.

If that peer doesn't respond back, does that mean they never cared for you or respected you?

This is assuming you're not that close to that peer, but you were respectful and nice to them during the time.

I'm in desperate need of tips to get genuine buy in from our predominantly white, male senior leadership to create a more inclusive environment. As is often the case, middle management and below is very diverse and then at Director+ it gets much more homogeneous. So far any real initiatives get shot down in favor of performative actions to post on SM. Is this just how it is, or can we try something different?

Hi all,

My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.

What is this? This is normal?

Stereotyping?
Racism?

The first time I ignored that, but now it has become a pattern and is bothering me now. I am south-American working in the UK.

General question: Is there any room in corporate America for real, actionable DE&I discussions and initiatives?
