I had no money to afford grad school and had to rely on a scholarship. I was pleased with what I made when I started my first job. At 250k it felt comfortable. At 400K I didn’t have to check before I spent money. At what I make now I know I can retire this weekend if I wish. The trick is being content at every stage and enjoying happiness and also saving a little along the way because we don’t know what tomorrow brings.

120/HCOL. no children, pets, or other dependents. felt like I could afford to live with one roommate (2 bedroom) in a nice building, max out 401k, put some money into savings, still travel 2-3 times a year, and have leftover for investments.

Chicago. When I made $50k and single, I felt great. My life was simple - GTL on the regular. My household income with wife and little boy is now at $260k and I feel like a broke ass.

AC3, anywhere from $7K to $40K. If you pay on the lower end of the spectrum in the city of Chicago, I wouldn't expect the education quality to be any higher than a decent public school.

160k. HCOL

Need and want are very different things. I only need to spend $13k a year for my current lifestyle, but I want to get paid much more than that.

HCOL (DC). 55k. When I was working for this one org I was still able to save quite a bit on that salary, but mostly just for retirement. Lived like I was a college student, aside from having a nicer room than in school. And it wasn't bad at all. I just save a lot more now, and I really appreciate it cause it makes my financial outlook so much brighter.

I’m at 109k currently in HCOL (CA) and definitely don’t feel like it’s enough. Single, no children, no dependents. Schools loans are a bitch. I’m hoping $120k will feel a bit better

Most to rent, then loans, maxing out 401k/Roth, and then whatever additional savings I can do + other living expenses. There’s pretty much nothing left over at the end

$150k Bay Area when single. With a kid, $400k.

Why exclude childcare? That's a pretty big expense for most families and directly ties into what I would want my salary to be.

I want to plan for a life without children due to health complications — I understand it’s probably hard to remove from expenses & will take those numbers into consideration if my life allows for it/I choose to adopt!

like

LCOL 180k household income. Anything above that is cool but just goes straight to savings

120k - Chicago

140k total comp in a lower COLA. But we have lots of kids and I’m the sole breadwinner. I feel very average.

Lifestyle changes. For a long time, 120k was good. Then other interests came up.

Single ~90k LCOLish. I feel like I can buy whatever I want or need at any point in time. I'm not a crazy spender so it's a lot for me.

250k

Has anyone here used a service to help you find a new job? I’m looking at one where they source and apply for jobs for me. They’ll also help me rework my resume, LinkedIn, and other materials, as well as interview coaching. I’ve been looking for a new position on my own with no luck for the past 6 months. The downside of this service is they charge a commission based on the salary for the job they place you in. Thoughts or advice?

Currently interviewing for a designer role at Tesla - wanted some advice. The hiring manager has seemed uninterested and always dropped off interviews early and without answering any of my questions. He also mentioned that he's lost 4 designers from the team recently (red flag!). I think it'd be a cool role, but it sounds like I'd be the only designer and there's not a ton of support, BUT if I do well - lots of room for growth and promotion.
