6 years in as a senior strategist
That’s such a good question- I feel like this is a combination of how much $ you’re making, how much you have saved, how you want to live your day-to-day and what job security you have.
Personally, I lived at home until I was 27 (I’m nyc based) then I bought a coop and lived alone. I had about 5 years of experience altogether
You forgot to add the biggest factor — family. Kiss your parents every day for letting you build up those years of equity.
27, but I prioritized living alone and budgeted for it.
gives me hope, same age, gunning for it once I make my next move if the starts align
When I was a mid-level art director in 2012, I got a 1-bedroom rent stabilized apartment for 1200/month in a pre-gentrified part of
Brooklyn. Stayed there for 9 years.

Probably when you’re making that CD money.
Depends where in NYC.
Ever since my first job in San Francisco. A studio in the city was only 1200 at the time.
Senior art director
When I was a junior I had a tiny studio in a dumpy old tenement building on the Lower East Side for $1,150 (about $1,800 in today’s dollars).
Anecdotally, I moved into a 1 bed in Hell’s Kitchen as a mid level copywriter (85k). The rent was around $2100.
I really couldn’t do roommates after I hit a certain age. I didn’t go out much and saved whatever I could. I stayed at that apartment for a few years with rent going up in small increments.
I stayed there all throughout 2020 during the Covid of it all and just moved to LA over a year ago for a new job. Not sure what the rent prices are lately.
1.5 years in, a very small rent stabilized studio

Senior. But like SC1 said. Priorities. After college I couldn't live with roommates no more and made it a priority to live alone and adjusted accordingly. That means compromising on space and lifestyle. But figured if I spend the better part of my time at home, I should have the mental and physical space to come back to.
