Au revoir SPG. It’s been a good ride. How many of you will be looking to ditch Marriott (or already have)? To which program are you moving ?

I don’t see any reason to jump ship. Being a Marriott member is actually better than ever. Love that I don’t need to worry about deciding between Marriott and SPG anymore. Nights add up faster and more properties to choose from. The new point redemption categories took some getting used to, but many of the properties I stay at are actually less points now. Only issue I have is the name “Bonvoy,” but I should be able to get over that.

I’m not sure you’ve been paying very close attention - your platinum check in bonus, which used to be 500 SPG points is now 500 BonVoy points. That’s 1/3 the previous value - the flexibility that Starwood used to give to Platinum guests around changes and cancellations (I never paid a fee, even at the last minute) is now “not allowed” per Marriott policy - the new “category” 8 puts most of SPGs best property’s that we’re 25k points per night at the equivalent of 28.3k per night. That kind of value attrition will continue to happen with Marriott

Hyatt now owns Illinois

like

I loved Westin and W brands, but I’m just so tired of Marriott screwing things up, taking away what used to feel like a much better experience and lowering the value of points / bonuses that I’m heading to Hyatt or Hilton

like

I don’t know what do do....sigh. I’m lifetime platinum which makes jumping ship harder

like

Also lifetime (Marriott) Platinum, seems to be Titanium under the new Bonvoy terminology. I find lifetime status liberating and I’m much more likely to stay with other brands now, usually Hilton given they’re really the only one with a similar number of properties and geographic coverage abroad.

Why are you ditching?

like

I still have my ambassador from SPG which makes me happy. I have 10 years 950 nights a bit hard to walk away

I am lifetime platinum. Jumped to Hyatt and Hilton. Like the Hyatt Properties

like

SM1, that should make it easier! If you end up hating Hilton or Hyatt or whoever you can just go back like nothing happened

like

this is true but I have mad love for my Sheraton and Westins

Definitely tempted to — I was in a weird edge case where because I went all-in on SPG all these years instead of splitting 50-50 with Marriott, I ended up with only enough years for LTG instead of LTPP. Since I’d have to stick around another 2 years just to get the consolation prize (LTP) and LTG is basically just a participation trophy, I’m definitely considering a switch to Hyatt as I like their properties and don’t travel to small towns nearly as much anymore so the lack of overall properties doesn’t affect me as much .

like

I’m happier with the combined program, more options. Also how have you waited until just now to switch??

Why the switch?

Staying. Stay with work at Marriott and Westin and spend points at ritz, JW and at Regis.

I can’t say I’m leaving Marriott, but I’ve been staying at Hilton a lot more.

Morally I cannot stay at Hyatt, so that’s off the list. I haven’t had better experiences with Hilton over what I have with new Marriott. I’m happy to stick around while everyone else leaves. 👋

They’ve enabled someone with no real world expertise to continue running Illinois into the ground. I’ll do my best to never help the Pritzker family make another dime

Just got told from the recruiter that I will be getting an offer from Apple as a Program Manager in San Jose (big jump lol). Right now I’m living in a MCOL city working remote, but I would need to move for this role (eventually lol). Any ideas on comp, living costs, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Hi Ladies! I’m transitioning to a manager of a team I’ve been leading. There’s been a lot of turnover with the team and I feel like I’m having a hard time getting the team to see me more as an authoritative figure. For example, when I ask for volunteers on a simple task, no one replies. Should I just resort to assigning rather than asking? Also are there leadership books you suggest that I could read up on? Thank you!

I understand that traditional vs. Roth 401k depends on tax bracket now vs. expected tax bracket in retirement. And of course there is the risk of changing tax laws. But what if you just don't know? Do you just split 50/50? Or once you're making over a certain amount, does it naturally make more sense to lean towards traditional? Not sure what other people do and what income level they make the shift to traditional, if at all.

I’m pretty sure colleagues at my firm are inflating their billable hours. Is this the norm? I suspect many of you will think this is obvious and/or that I’m naive but wtf?
