3-5 years, but prob faster if you jump agencies...and I agree w EP2. It’s about skill, which no one seems to recognize in production these days—except the poster yesterday that said GOOD PRODUCERS ARE HOT (thx poster!) Everyone wants fast/good/cheap/and now, young—pick 4. It’s a craft, like any other craft. It takes time to get good at it, not panic under fire, and solve problems creatively and elegantly.
It’s not time that determines a title increase. It’s skill and mastery.
OP also consider that in Production unlike other agency roles you really have 3-4 possible titles if you still want to make work at agencies rather than manage just manage people: AP, Producer, Sr Producer and EP. If you want a 20-30yr career then why rush to get to EP as quickly as possible? Slow down build your network and your skill set. The faster you get to EP the faster you increase the end of your career on the agency side.
EP3 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It won’t do you or anyone else any good if you speed through titles without mastering the craft. Be a good producer and the titles will come.
Depends on skill and initiative taken. Although, I don’t like when Producers of mine expect a title bump after only a year at current level.
Thanks all! Agree that skill and mastery is key. Just feeling like I’m seeing so many people jump titles after a year or two in any such position that it’s hard to gauge what is really reasonable nowadays - blowing my mind a bit. I feel seasoned but always so much still to learn!!!
I saw an AP go to Producer then Sr then EP in about 5 years
DDB1 I’ve worked for a 29yr old HoP at a highly awarded production shop. The promotions with zero work/experience to back it up are off the rails.
@OP - Always learning something. Regardless of the position ;-)
