B4 Manager (40+) from India tells his team of millennials that he expects them to work long hours because he never had weekends to enjoy back in India when he was their age. Is it a valid expectation?

Doesn’t matter about their ages or generations; there’s no logic here and he’s likely wasting time or needlessly pushing his team towards burnout. I would be concerned with both A) whether the project actually requires long hours B) his inability to create a compelling argument for long hours

Do you think this guy gets fun by making people work long works as if its like a path to salvation since he has gone through hardships in life. In most cases projects are short staffed compared to budget. Also your specifics around age and ethnicity is interesting. What demography do you belong to? @OP

If the project is short staffed due to budget it’s not my problem. Working longer hours you justify the small budget, and so that problem will never be addressed. I work longer hours but only in very rare exceptions, as working longer hours is not even that productive and it’s likely to generate burnout. I might never become director, but I prefer my good work/life balance, and I’m very against to anyone who promote or justify working long hours.

Definitely valid. In addition to this, I allow my team 1 bathroom break and 1 snack break a day. They can use their bathroom break to have lunch, if they want but I prefer they’re productively working through both

You’re kidding right P1 lol

Absolutely not. I look at this as more of a generational difference. (I’m Indian, FWIW.)

I am an Indian. The work culture in offshore delivery centers is horrible. Some of these managers get transferred over to US and bring their work culture with them. The question is, why isn’t it changing? Indian managers have been working with US for almost 30 years now. Lot of them have spent plenty time in US on H1 and went back. Most of them complained about culture when they were individual contributors. The culture is surviving because that’s what top management is encouraging, because that what our clients are expecting. It’s a commodity business and the super-focus on cost is assumed. The clients would pay half a million dollars for 3 month advisory, will not pay the same amount for a year long Production Support. It’s easy to identify (and hate) symptoms, but difficult to get to the root cause - which lies in the greed of American corporate. People from poorer countries (India in tech services. China in manufacturing) are simply looking for making their living.

Yes. An onshore project doesn’t need it, but Indian managers do it out of habit. But then, that’s the symptom I’m talking about.

No. That’s ridiculous and your leadership should dunk on him.

No.
