Background story - I interviewed with a company that I really want to work for for a role that I was a perfect fit for. I went through 5 rounds of interviews then was told that they ended up going with an internal referral however the entire team loved me so much and they're looking for other roles for me. I thanked them for their time and didn't really take their word but 2 weeks later I get contacted again for another opportunity on a different team. (Cont'd in comment)

Go for it! We don’t grow by being scared and I think that is where you are at right now. As long as the position has a path up, I would take on the challenge! Good luck!

If the role you applied for is too similar to what you currently do they may not have seen you growing in that position but since they loved you and seen tremendous value in what you can bring, taking on a slight bit of a challenge can benefit you and them. Imposter syndrome is real but trust yourself and the company. I don’t think they would’ve jumped through hoops for someone they felt was incapable. You got this 👏🏽

Maybe ask in the interview with the Director what are the short term and then long term goals of your role on the new team? That way you can get an idea of the amount of work that needs to be done in the short term. If it's not something crazy, then you have plenty of time to learn and grow in this position.

like

Agree 100% ☝️, that said , compare your current role against the new prospective role - If they are HUGELY divergent, you may in-fact be setting yourself up for failure, though that’s doubtful. Remember, the company’s objective is to achieve success and at this point you’ve gone through multiple rounds between the 2 positions so clearly they see tremendous value in you and you obviously know your sh*t… Trust yourself!

Wouldn't say hugely but enough to make me sweat a little haha. Just need to remind myself that I didnt have enough experience when I started my career and I worked hard to get to where I am today so this is no different

The problem is I have almost no relevant experience for this role but I somehow made it to the final interview with the director of the team. Im concerned that Ill end up getting the job and severely underperforming. Am I right to feel this way? Should I turn it down? Or did I make it this far for a reason and I'm just underestimating myself? I've worked with so many people that were clearly underqualified for the roles and they seemed fine. Is that normal?

Probably the best advice someone can get! Thank you for your comment ❤

Definitely go for it - sometimes we see things in candidates that you may not see in yourself. I do it for people who are company material but not for the specific position. It's a good place to be in. All jobs have a learning curve - It's normal to feel this way. Some companies like to hire people that are coachable and can mold them into something/someone with more skills.

I was in the same boat about a month ago - offered a position I was originally recruited for but definitely didn’t have the experience to excel. I’d definitely take a look at Glassdoor to see how happy employees are with the current operations, even speak internally to people who work there to get a feel of how they hire if you need. This place that offered the position definitely didn’t seem to understand what it took to ensure success in that role. I ultimately turned it down because I figured it’d be best to stay where I’m at to learn and gain gain more experience. Also, figured if I am unqualified and don’t know what I’m doing, I might end up struggling and not liking my job (culture and workload dependent) and maybe end up with no job in the end. It’s up to you if you’d like to stay safe and wait for the right opportunity or fake it til you make it. Also need to take into account the opportunity to take risk in this economy too though.

That's the thing... I'm not happy where I'm at. I have taken a look at the reviews and actually spoke to internal people too. Ive gotten mixed feedback. I know it's not 100% the environment I want to be in however it'll open up so many doors and opportunities for me which is honestly the main reason I'm considering it!

Okay so here’s the deal.
I have several years that I haven’t had a job interview because when I needed to change jobs it was for people who knew my work personally and the offer was on the table. However, now I applied for a new job via LinkedIn and tomorrow I have an online interview and currently even though I know I’m perfect for the job and I know my abilities, I’m afraid I’ll fail.
Any advice on how to have a successful interview?
