Bain🐠, do ANY of y’all know experienced hires that got into your firm pre-MBA (no advanced degree)? These mythical creatures, or rather unicorns that are rare but possible?

Yes they exist. The ones I’ve seen are Specialist Consultants who work with specific groups.

We are starting to hire more at the post MBA level for people who don’t have an MBA, but have certain skills and specializations. We also hire generalists at that level, but not many and you need a minimum of 5 YOEs

like

Yup, know one who did 2 yrs at a BB (not as an IB) and came in as an AC1

like

Yes! I worked with four this year 😊 One came after two years at an internal strategy group in industry (joined at AC1) and three came with 4+ years from other consulting shops (as C1). All generalists. It wasn’t as common in previous years but we’ve started doing more of it in the past two years.

like

No problem! Happy to help. I’d still ask, or maybe even try to see if they’ll take you on at AC2 contingent on first few months of strong performance/culture fit (very unlikely but who knows) - and if they say no, then honestly do another year at Deloitte and then try again. It might also be worth trying to connect with a senior consultant (manager or partner) and getting their take because they’ll be closer to firm strategy on this. The SAC to C1 jump is a big promotion in the US (pay is also the same at all tenures regardless of MBA vs not), so you might as well try to come in at the C1 level. The C1 role for new Bain hires is also a baseline of sorts, so it’s not like you’re missing out on training or at risk of not getting promoted by joining at that level. But you’d definitely want to be a top performer at your current firm to even be considered.

I regret not having done my MBA from an IVY League B school. I have seen industry and HR professionals being biased towards people from IIMs and so on. While I am currently doing decently well, I can't help feel bad for experiencing the bias in terms of promotions and CTC. Even the new/baby IIMs (some of which I have left to join my B school) are now given more importance. How can I offset this bias?

I really want to pursue an MBA to try to pivot into a different industry but I’m getting so many (mostly older) people saying things like “ you should think about settling down” or “you should consider how an intense career is going to affect your future children” or “isn’t where you are good enough?” It’s really been bugging me because I feel like if I was a guy, I would probably hear much more supportive comments! Anyone else experience this?

What should be the salary bracket for Consultant 3 with 3.3 years of exp after a tier 2 MBA, in Consulting? I'm getting an offer of 14 fixed +10% var + 1.5 JB. This is barely a 30% hike from my current fixed so I'm curious if I'm being lowballed.

Hi everyone, I have 5 yoe in start up operations no MBA and interviewing for a tech business analyst role at Accenture. I was asked my salary expectation and didn’t have a thought out answer tbh and blurted out base of 90 at least Does anyone know if I was in the appropriate range, or if I lowballed myself? 😬☹️ I’d like to start thinking about how to turn that 1 number into a range in my next convo 🤞🏾. Thank you!
