Bali vs. Chiang Mai for 5 days in early August? Trying to figure out if monsoon season in Chiang Mai is that big of a deterrent

Those are two super different experiences. Monsoon season isn’t a huge deal, in the sense that it’s pretty rainy in Chiangmai year round. Usually rains in the AM, then it clears out before lunch. Bali, IMO is meh... hard to get to, full of Aussie bogans, mediocre diving. If you’re thinking you wanna go to the beach, stay in Thailand and fly to Samui... I’m sure there will be tons of opinions on this topic, but I backpacked SEA for 9 months before I started working, and I’ve been back almost every year since, so I have a little first-hand experience...

I’m voting Chiang Mai, I loved it there. Bali is ok, it’s Cancun for Austrian beach bums. The beaches are gross, though inland is nice, I liked the jungle.

Just realized it was a typo, meant to be Australian, not Austrian.

Chiang Mai for sure!

Thanks guys! And what were your favorite parts about Chiang Mai vs. Bali?

We did a Thailand honeymoon during monsoon season, got lucky and only had rain one day, although we were in Bangkok and the islands and didn’t hit Chiang mai
