It looks like I may clear conflicts about a week before I'm scheduled to take a vacation at my current firm. I was told by my current firm that I won't be able to get coverage for all my matters and will likely need to be available to work for a few hours a day during this vacation. How should I handle this? Is it inevitable that I'll have to work during my vacation right before I quit or is there a way to avoid it?

You’re quitting. Who cares if they need coverage while you’re on vacation? Tee everything up in advance, make a list of open items, and go on the damn vacation. Also, maybe you’ll get lucky and they’ll ask you to leave before. Problem solved!

why don’t you… set a boundary

Tell them you will not have internet access

like

If they try to give you a sat link (they won’t), tell them you won’t have power access. I once did a backcountry ski trip where I didn’t have consistent power access for several days at a time—glorious.

like

This is tough because you don’t want to burn bridges unnecessarily. Why don’t you reach out to the associates yourself - if you can get one of them to cover, then you can go back to the firm and say you’ve got it handled.

If no one is available, tell them that where you’re going will have limited coverage and it would not be possible to guarantee Internet access at any particular time.

perhaps consider also giving an additional week of notice to make up for the time you will be unavailable during vacation

For all you retail people...are you experiencing a very slow holiday season? I am a retail manager and I feel like this season has been freakishly slow. I thought we would at least match last year's number or be up a little bit but we are trending down. I talked to employees of other stores in the mall and they are saying the same thing. Is anyone else experiencing this in their market?

For my US-based HR colleagues:
Are you aware that many countries in Europe have a minimum of 25 PTO + 10 public holidays?
Did you also know you could use those days to travel from country to country for 20$ or less?
Would you ever consider relocating to the EU?

Received a job offer today and unsure how to proceed. The role is lateral but with more opportunity to advance. The offer consists of a 17% base salary increase, a 25% annual bonus structure, and a signing bonus of 25% of my base. I feel that the offer is fair but the downside is fewer vacation days. I intend to negotiate the vacation time but as far as the compensation I am unsure if I should negotiate.. the offer is fair and I don't want to be greedy but I don't want to miss an opportunity

How do you all manage exercise and meds? I take vyvanse and have a peloton, but am kinda scared of the heart rate increase combination. I find the vyvanse takes about 2h to kick in and so I try to take it by 6am otherwise I’m dealing with the “hitting me” feeling when at work (which has resulted in some really embarrassing situations). In the evenings, I’m so hungry that a workout is harder to do plus you never know when the work day will end!

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Verizon. This company only cares about numbers and does not promote based on how good you are. Office politics plays a bigger role. Verizon schedules your schedule based on their needs and not on yours. You are just a number at this company. I was told to sell a credit card to a poor man who couldn't afford to pay his next rent payment so that he can buy accessories. Verizon talks about "integrity" But that's just BS. I have never worked for a company it morally so corrupt.
