Bay Area people, how much household income do you think to make it here ? By make it, I mean 1-2 kids, a home you OWN, Family vacations every year /extra curricular activities for the kids. 250-300k?

What’s to share? Have $750k house. Plenty of them run north of $10M in town- they tend to have some acreage and a lake though. The secret tip is to have in laws that give you $250k as a wedding gift, and give your wife a credit card.

We make 225ish and can afford a 1000 sq ft townhome, 1 kid and a vacation but aren’t saving a ton. If you want a SFH in a decent neighborhood, you’re looking at minimum 1m

like

I’d just go somewhere else. My wife and I make $175k in NJ. Live in a six bedroom home, in an affluent town. Half an acre for the kids and dogs to run around, and 40 minutes to the shore, where we vacation for two weeks every Summer.

> $500k for sure if you want a decent home with a backyard

Even Morgan hill is $1M for decent areas....

150-200k if willing to commute and live on the outer edges of Bay Area

My husband and I make about $280. We live in a rented apartment, but have investment properties worth ~1.8m in other cities. Money is no object when we eat, we travel abroad 3 times a year, and domestically maybe 6 times a year.

Now if you threw a kid in that equation ... i would say don’t live here. You’d probably need an extra $50k/year?

Extra bedroom ~ 12k
Nanny ~ 30k
Food, fun, etc ~ 10k

Obviously this is on the high end of prices because OP specified “making it”- implying you want to be 100% comfortable. I think I’m living a 100% comfortable lifestyle right now, and that’s with $280k and NO kids. SF is crazy 😵

I use excel to track savings(401,Roth,etc) that I want the YTD to update as I contribute ea month.
Not the best with Excel yet, but I calculate the YTD total by referencing the cell of the prior month and adding to the current months total box- is this the most efficient way to do this? Thanks!

If it matters, I never set foot in CA.

I am a first year and just started with the firm as an auditor. The more I go through busy season, the more I realize I don’t want to pursue audit. Can someone tell me how I can switch into advisory internally? or if I should just apply externally and leave? Also is it too soon to leave since I’m only a first year, or can I leave right after the busy season? Not sure what to do but don’t want to spend more time at a job I don’t love.
