BCG: within the US, how important is office alignment to the projects you get staffed on, industries you work in, people you work with, overall experience, etc.? At Kearney we have a national staffing model so I'm trying to understand how an office-based model might impact one's experience

It’s a regional model mostly, although I have worked across all regions. They usually have first dibs on you, unless you get partner pull from somewhere else. When staffing is super tight, it gets tougher to go across regions.
The office is very important for your project opportunities.
In general, you are only staffed on projects sold by MDPs in your region. So if you’re in NYC (northeast region), then healthcare, industrial goods, CPG and finance projects are abundant. But tech projects are more rare.
Each office has a public website that list their primary industries. Look at that website because it is very faithful to the types of projects you will join.
