Bully and bullied…and make quite well now. But other bullies are doing well too 😳

Both. I think most people if they think about it will remember at least one time where they were the bully.

like

This.

I was a bookish kid who got my share of playground crap, but when I entered high school I became friends with some pretty girls that mostly shielded me from larger bullying - although they bullied me plenty themselves. And I am confident that we as a group would absolutely be accused of bullying, even if I don’t particularly think I personally did too much bullying.

I can’t comprehend how so many people answer “both”…
If you’ve been bullied, how can you inflict that on another human being? Being the victim of systematic bullying is one of the worst experiences a child can endure. How do you survive that and decide to inflict that pain on another child?

I was severely bullied before changing schools and become quite popular later on.
Considering suicide as a 13 year old is something that marks you for life.

Although I like to believe I always tried to watch out for “weaker” individuals, I’m sure I didn’t always speak up. However, I don’t think I could look myself in the mirror if I had to admit to myself that I took part in active bullying myself.

like

Yeah I think perhaps we are defining bullying differently.

In my own elementary and middle school, all accept the very “coolest” kids got shit intermittently - people making fun of your looks, clothes, name, something dumb you said in class. I guess I considered this “bullying” but perhaps you or the OP mean something more severe and sustained. I do not believe anyone in my schools was regularly physically bullied, or if so it must have been pretty under the radar.

Perhaps I look back with rose colored glasses or just wasn’t paying attention, but I can’t think of anyone at any of my schools who didn’t have ANY friends or who was constantly ridiculed. Maybe my community was nice, idk! There were really active science Olympiad, chess, theater, band, role playing game scenes and it feels like all the kids who would have been “bullied” sort of banded together into their own little outsider squads and did their own things.

When I was in high school, I was a part of a girl clique that was very exclusionary in a way that likely felt like bullying to other people but was largely not directed anywhere and did not have any specific targets although probably mean comments were made in passing around looks or personality. Mostly we had a concerted effort to “punch above our weight” - ie, if we were going to be openly mean to someone, it should be someone more popular than us and likely older. And in retrospect, it was just as unpleasant to be on the inside of this structure as I was subjected to near constant dissection of my appearance, weight, boys I talked to, if I was “being awkward”, ect. I consider this mild bullying in retrospect, and when I look around the people I know in high school much of the most unpleasant aspects of their high school experience were wrought on them by folks they were close to rather than by some torturous bully. So to me, the whole “I am bully and bullied” make sense - it’s part of the weird, isolating social dynamics of growing up. People learning how to push on others, how to communicate, how to try to get what they want and need, how to be liked and respected. Most people don’t have great models of this at home, much less in our culture. Of course teenagers hurt eachother!

I think there has to be a better to socialize kids and teens that creates more empathy and less hurt, but I also think it’s good for kids to find their footing and thicken their skin a bit because people are not nice all the time.

Oh hey look, we’re fishbowl twins (except you’re in consulting)

I was the bully — I was a sadistic kid but didn’t like injustice, so I picked on kids who picked on other kids. I liked to make aspiring bullies squirm, especially when they realize they’re not the meanest kid on the block and try to double down. I think that’s why I ended up at my job…

Bullied.

Physical stuff in middle school, but that quickly stopped when my nerdy self developed a reputation for violently retaliating. I choked one kid out until he turned purple and began to claw for air, and I kicked another in the groin so hard he fell on the ground screaming in agony. Both are now in prison for separate bad decisions.

Emotional mockery and harassment in high school from some rival kid with a major inferiority complex and nasty attitude. I had the last laugh when I graduated valedictorian and went to HYP for college. He’s since had a slow start professionally and blocked me on LinkedIn 🤣

Yikes… that’s messed up. Being different isn’t a good reason to bully someone. You really shouldn’t bully anyone unless they were an asshole/ behaving in a way that was asking for it.

I was the bully in middle school. It wasn’t malicious, I just didn’t want to put up with kids pulling crap and trying to get away with it. In hindsight it wasn’t my business and I should’ve let those kids figure it out on their own

like

Neither until college. I got along collegially with people at school and outside activities.

I went to a military school with a very harsh system and was absolutely the victim my freshman year, then victimizer my junior, and to a much lesser extent, senior year. Hazing was an integral part of the development system at the school.

Bullied for years by one girl. Exacted sweet, social status-obliterating revenge in 6th grade and that ended it. It was the beginning of the end of me giving a shit about the feelings of bullies and blowhards.

Neither. I was one of those quirky drama/band kids. We were harmless, unassuming, super inclusive, and everyone knew us because we were on stage all the time. Nothing to be bullied about and no one to bully. Thankful for that experience because I know a lot of ppl had it far worse

Hello fellow HR pros! I really need your opinions on HR certifications. I am deciding between PHR and SHRM-cp. I have read just about all there is online comparing the two and can not decide. My heart is telling me PHR, my mother in law (an HRBP) is telling me to go with SHRM, as it’s more widely recognized, more established and a larger network in general. I work for a 350~ company who is growing rapidly through M&A. Passions/interests are compliance, strategic vision, M&A, branding and culture

Baby furniture. What is everyone doing? FTM and trying to figure out if it’s worth investing in very expensive nursery furniture. We were looking at the Natart furniture collection and the Silva collections. These both come in at about $2000-$2400. The furniture is high quality and grows with the child. Alternatively I could go the lower end route at get everything for like $800. Is that wise? I hear horror stories about low quality and paint chipping from the baby teething on the crib.

I went back to school last year. My employer knows this. I am currently off on a 8 week LOA to care for a child having surgery.
I had a job offer drop into my lap and am very interested in taking it. The new place is supportive of my need to care for my kid at this time and is looking at a flexible day including a lot of WFH options.
Is it acceptable to start new place while on LOA from my current job? I want to be sure it's a good fit before I give notice.

anyone have recommended resources on how to parent?

Any New York attorneys come across any interesting or helpful case law lately? Reading a recent update, there was a decision that said where a parent uses a temporary order of legal and physical custody to exclude the other parent, it's within the Court's rights (with other factors) to interpret that as an inability to coparent and award custody to the prior non-custodial parent. I’m so stressed out. I haven’t been here very long (about 15 months), and my wife is expecting our second baby this winter. I’ve been having issues with my managers for the past few months, and I feel like it’s just a matter of time before I’m gone. I want to look for a new job, but I’m afraid it will be an impossible time to get hired elsewhere. Anyone got any advice for getting a new role as a finance engineer?
