I'm not sure if its a industry policy but I had to rollover my 401k twice and each time with paper checks. These were well known servicers.

And if the market drops 3% on Monday and Tuesday? Or maybe more? You can't guarantee anything happens in the market. You may find yourself buying in cheaper depending what happens.

likefunny

For sure. We are all big boys and girls and moving the money in a period of high volatility comes with its risks. Just lamenting what has at least started out as some bad timing.

like

They all send paper checks when you rollover

like

I think a transfer is at least possible if staying at the same institution.

Got a paper check from Fidelity but I think that's because 401k and IRA are on separate systems. I think one department was from an acquisition or something.

helpful

I just rolled over from Fidelity and they cut a paper check. It’s not common that it’s digital.

Be grateful FedEx didn’t lose your rollover check in the mail and you had to get it reissued after 2 weeks 🙃🙃🙃

likefunny

Sometimes it works out the other way, where the gap lets you dodge a bullet to miss a day or two of massive losses.

smart

This is why you don't.roll over your 401k when the market is more volatile than usual. Of course you can never predict, but we've al be seeing swings recently and are anticipating craziness around the election period.

Even if it wasn't a paper check, there still would have been time out of the market. You need to sell your 401k stocks then buy stocks in the IRA. And if it's automated it could have so happened that it was sold on a low and bought on a high.

Been there

We help do a lot of rollovers at work and we always ask the custodian if they can wire the funds. They don’t usually bring it up proactively.

I do an after tax roll over into my Roth IRA every paycheck. It’s a paper check each time.

If you have a good investor for you roll over he is going to ask you your goals and from that start a plan to invest according to that!! He will place it in different types of investment not just stocks. Then set up a schedule to meet with you and update your investments and plan as your life change.
You will get it all back and more!!

Just ended things a few weeks ago with my BF of 18 months. First serious long term relationship for either of us in awhile. Things just fizzled out romantically but still friends. I told him this very clearly and that I still wanted to be friends, just romantically my heart wasn't there. Before he always had told me no matter what he wanted to be friends and keep me in his life. Now why haven't I heard from him in 2 weeks? Imagine it's just hurt pride but like seriously?

Slight vent: I had saved up a bunch of PTO to travel a ton this year (long-term project) which obviously got kicked to the dust and I have a bunch expiring this year because of that. Was looking forward to next year (including a family trip that’s been on the calendar for 2 years), but 3 people just left the team, only 1 will be replaced, and 3 more announced parental leave in spring. I have go lives through February and feel like I’m sprinting a marathon and will never get a break now.

I’ve done media management on 3 unscripted shows now, the last was a 3 year contract on a talk show. An earlier one I was embedded city subjects at sea for 4 months. I was a gaffer and key grip for a decade before that with occasional Cam Op gigs and did a bunch of one person crew unscripted content for clients along the way too. Often I end up doing the labor of 4 or 5 people while having 3 or more managers that just send emails. Any tips for protecting myself from this happening again?

Hi 🐠🐟 Moms,

Does anyone have any advice to motivate my 7yo. 2nd grader to try his best at school? We have been doing home schooling now since q4 of kindergarten. Mom & dad WFH and we didn't see the reason to send our oldest to school unmasked and unvaccinated to risk the rest of family / siblings. We celebrate his achievements. Give him report card bonuses. I even let him turn in assignments not done completely so he would get the grade he deserves. That just turned into more work. Cont'd

Switching jobs for the first time (late 20s). I have a 401k with PwC; new co doesn’t offer matching. Also have savings. Thinking I need to (1) decide if PwC or new co 401k has better funds before transferring the PwC balance (2) open Roth IRA and contribute max before 12.31, repeat next year and (3) put savings (less emergency fund) in an investment account. Thoughts / recommendations for the above?

Should you time your investments in Index funds? The market seems so high right now. I am worried about putting in a whole bunch of money all at once---should I space it out to hedge?

I have about $50K in my 401K and I also have 24K car loan @ 4.5% with CapOne. Would it be a bad move for me to take $24K loan from my 401K to pay off the car? I will then put the monthly car payment ($500) towards paying off the 401K loan

I get to pay myself the interest, have better credit, and better DTI to get a second mortgage.
