I've been pondering this a lot lately too. I ultimately decided against it cuz it felt like I was trying to do it to be a part of their influencer group rather than bettering myself. I don't think there's anything wrong with them, but I think it's easy to fall into a sort of professional vanity while trying to join them.
For what it's worth, I found a lot more satisfaction from starting a newsletter as opposed to commenting on popular ad tweets and like counting.
I am a junior creative , and I think its needed for people with more experience to put themselves out there . It is needed for the us ( the junior, the students, & the ones who would fit perfectly in this industry, but have no idea about it) . We need to see people the look like us out there thriving ... showing that it is possible for us to do the same.
🙏🏾 I hear you, and I think you're right.
There are a bunch of black influencers
You've clearly never been to the Ad Club of NY's annual black history month event. Everyone honored are usually people that I regularly see on LinkedIn and other advertising spaces. And it's way more than 10
I hear what you're saying but you really do have experience, add value and a fresh voice go for it.
Thanks AD2 appreciate that response as I've been trying to figure this out.

Idk how I feel about the term influencer, I tried. Idk how it’s goin hahahah

I would say I’m influential in my community to an extent, but I could do more written pieces to be more influential.

Honestly, doing a great job, helping your agency (or you) gain more business, creating space to bring more of us in the ad/marketing/brand spaces is the best type of influence. At some point in our careers, all of us will be in adweek for something.
I’ve noticed a lot of millennials and Gen Z sharing their interests, passions, and helpful content on YouTube. The tricky part is be careful with your name and how you present yourself online. You are your own brand! Also explore channels like TikTok.
Would you mind elaborating a bit?
I think that the industry benefits from us not sharing our stories or our shine. It’s necessary for us to amplify ourselves and become a force outside of work. It will only help propel your career if you do it strategically. Walter Geer (ECD at VLMY&R) is a perfect example of someone using their voice and blazing a new path forward. Best of luck and share your magic!!
Maybe I’m misreading, but why do you think that if you became an ad influencer you’d be creating a new class of gatekeeper?
There is already an inherent disconnect between our industry and Black bodies, does elevating yourself or more specifically seeking that elevation actually do a disservice to tearing down walls for others.
Influencer or influential?
Definitely influential > influencer.
