Get the hotel to pay for you luggage and clothes. This happened to me in Chicago and they ended up paying me $500 and making my hotel stay free.
OP. I am sorry to hear that. I suggest before heading back home, stop at a dry cleaner and have all of your clothes (i mean all including the ones you are wearing at that time) dey cleaned. I know it might sound ridiculous but get rid of your luggage. Bed bugs are not joke. I was going to suggest that you should also get rid off your clothes but not sure how valuable they are. You might be OK with some high temperature cleaning.
Whatever you do take home, put it in a big garbage bag before you bring it in the door. Even if you've previously dry cleaned, Put all of your clothes immediately into the washer and dry longer than usual. Then leave your suitcase sitting in your garage for a week or two still in the garbage bag. (Or get rid of it.)
They also sell a hot box for objects you can launder, like shoes, ties, etc. it heats the contents up to 140 degrees or so and is on a timer.
When I get home, laundry goes in the wash, dry cleaning hits the bag, and my suitcase hits the box
I think it does, but I’m a bit over the top after an incident about ten years ago. Haven’t had an issue since, but that could be because I scan my hotel rooms like crazy, leave my suitcase in the bathroom, and use the hot box.
What hotel/city? Please do us all a favor so we can avoid bed bugs.
I echo the sentiments of high heat. As a precaution, I also keep my luggage in the bathroom (with the lights on) the first day or two I stay at a hotel to make sure there aren't any bb. I would also encourage you to report your hotel on the bb registry online and always check your mattress on day 1 for peace of mind. I think taking your clothes to the dry cleaners might spread the bugs rather than necessarily get rid of them to others, so I would try if you can to seal your clothes in a ziploc and launder them on high heat when you get back. Whatever you can't launder, have the hotel replace. As for your luggage - is it a hard case? If it's a soft duffel, you can put that in the laundry too. I also think alcohol could clean your luggage rather than throw it away, but you have to wipe down everything, which could be hard. Before any of that enters your home, put it in a plastic bag and take all the clothes & toiletry bags out in your bathtub. Also be wary of your shoes. If you can wash them, wash them. Also, even the nicest hotels can't control this issue, but they can react swiftly to it. If you want, ask them if they have another property in the area where you could use their rate until they confirm this issue is taken care of. I would anticipate that takes about 1-2 weeks to get an exterminator and kill the bugs. Unless your room wasn't the only one impacted... Hope for the best for you! I had those pests in my apartment before a few years back due to travel and am always on high alert given our occupation.
PWC2 super interested in this does it work well?
The ^ is not a bad option time permitting. Alternatively, there's bed bug spray - spray it copiously over all of your stuff then launder / wash when you get home.
PwC2 is right. With some heat, bed bugs are easy to kill. A normal cycle in the dryer will kill all stages (eggs, larvae, etc.) so clothes are fine but do put them in trash bags until washed/dried. Suitcase ideally goes into a hot place, too. Car trunk in the sun would do. But that'll be tough this time of year.
So really they only paid for the luggage but still, the hotel should give you something
Burn it all
A2 did you stay at that hotel again after the incident? Or did you cut ties? I actually really like this hotel but this is disgusting. Also there was a silverfish in my bathroom this morning (new room) nbd but still...
I cut ties. It was Club Quarters in Chicago’s central loop. Liked the hotel, but didn’t want to have to go through throwing out my stuff again.
Bed bugs are not a joke. Literally put everything in a bag before walking through the door, leave I.T outside for a week until they die. Do not walk through the door with anything. Do not risk bringing I.T back
Bed bugs can live for a year with no food. Just saying, can't assume putting them in a bag for a week will kill them. It won't.
Alright so the manager convinced me that it wouldn't have gotten on the bench where I had my luggage. They are putting all my stuff through their heavy duty industrial dryer. I think they are handling it decently but I haven't talked to them yet about compensation. I feel a bit better but also just super disappointed.
