ISO Marketo expert to lead a team.
White female here, mid thirties. I was with my first job, a US SaaS company, for 6 years. Started as marketing analyst at 42K. Left as Senior Manager 72K. This was 7 years ago now, and I had to ask for more money to go from 60K to 72K with my promo to senior manager. It's really hard to get big jumps in TC at the same company. It's almost always worth it to switch.
I decided to leave that role, found an opportunity in marketing at a Consulting firm, took a step down in title to Associate marketing manager, but negotiated 100k base plus 10% bonus was offered. Completed my MBA part time, self funded. 5 years later, promoted to manager at 130K plus same 10% bonus and recently asked for more money and got 140K plus same bonus.
Now, 7 yrs later, I'm leaving the company for my first director of marketing title, with base 200K and TC 300K. Not everyone's journey will be the same, and comparison is the great killer of contentment. I've been lucky with great leadership over the years that planted good seeds in me and let me take on bigger responsibility over time. I did have to ask for it though. You have to advocate for yourself. I've learned that 1) you have to ask for what you want--in your role and comp, 2) you have to show progressing responsibility and building new skillsets and leadership, you have to prove yourself worthy of more pay, and 3) you dont have to jump around a ton to make big leaps in TC. If you stay somewhere a long time, then when you do make a career move, make it a big move... in terms of responsibility and comp. Really go for it so you can negotiate from a position of strength. Then knock it out of the park.
If I were in your shoes, I'd start casually interviewing to see what comes across your desk. I'd also ask for a meeting to discuss your comp, come prepared with some researched figures, cite your great track record and desire to stay with the company long term, and ask for what comp you think is appropriate! Best wishes for you!
Lesson 4) Be patient and wait for your moment. I'm obviously making a big leap in TC now, but I put it a lot of time at lower levels, building skills and getting tons of low risk practice. I didnt rush it, and I wasn't too ambitious to a fault, if that makes sense. I didnt rush out after my MBA and command a big salary, instead had 3 maternity leaves and got a promotion. Then I let life settle down a bit. Everything will happen when it's supposed to. 😁
I’m also working at a B2B SaaS company with 4 years of experience (I know it’s not much for a director but my job functions and title is still Marketing director).
I joined this company last year with 45K total compensation (I was an idiot for accepting that job) and now I’m at 70k plus 5% bonus.
My girlfriend got her very first job fresh out of college about a month ago and she’s making 80k plus 5% bonus!
Been thinking of leaving this company, especially because I’m working long hours with no appreciation and no work life balance for little money.
If you are solving for compensation and career trajectory, try consulting.
I'm in Canada too. Went from under $100K TC in an agency, to $150K TC in consulting, to $190K base + equity (may not worth much or may be a lot) at a startup within 13 months. All in roles similar to yours.
