Been at the firm 3 years out of UG as an Associate. I just got promoted to Senior Associate but want to leave for better work-life balance. How long do I need to stay in the new role before leaving?

Yeah it doesn’t matter. Start looking now, it’s a 4-5 month process anyway

Have you been performing at a senior level? If so you probably don’t really need to stay all that long

I want to make the time and effort I’ve put in count and be able to leverage my new title and pay into a industry job that is stimulating but not my entire life. I was an engineering major if that matters

Start planning now and looking around using your network. Starting a new job is the same as starting a new client project, you have a better chance of getting a good role if you know someone. Start applying in september so that you collect your bonus in october before leaving.

All high achievers want to leave or retire at the top of their game, not when they are down and out and are pushed out. So the best time to leave is when you have been just promoted so you can use your new title and new pay to negotiate a better offer. That said you better have a good story why you want to leave when you have just been promoted. But it should be an easy one. Good luck!
