Been in my role for 1.5 years and got my first raise, a whopping 2%. Manager just quit and I’m trying to step up. What’s the best way to negotiate a significant salary bump without coming across as opportunistic? Is it ok to begin conversations (to be considered) as the replacement during the manager’s notice period?

Most raises are between 2-5%, and it’s rare that a significant salary bump happens unless you change companies.

Raises usually come out of a specific funding by bucket for the year so they tend to be lower than people would like to ensure everyone can get a consistent raise and it’s not a situation where one person gets 10% and another gets 2% because there’s no money left.

Product Design Engineer, interviewing at Apple (Cupertino) and at Meta (Seattle/Redmond). Not at the offer stage yet, but I'm contemplating where I would relocate with family.
No idea about team/culture/stability differences yet.

The non-work factors I'm debating are:
1. Cost-of-living (housing!). Could probably afford a nice ~$1.25M SFH in Seattle suburbs sooner than a fair $1.5-2M near Cupertino.
2. Public School quality. Unsure private will be affordable.
3. Weather/region: activities

When it comes to your job search:

1) How often/much do you get feedback from recruiters or whoever you just spoke with? Feels like we're always in the dark. One way feedback street.

2) Who do you like to work with? Headhunters vs internalrecruiters? Is the experience different?

3) Have you had to align your interviews so that the offers would come in close/same day? What's your strategy?

4) What's your process in weighing [multiple] offers? If that ever happens? Where do you keep your notes?
