Been reading articles on how to improve your look on Zoom calls and some say using virtual backgrounds lower your executive presence. Do you agree? And let’s assume you’re not using an Office Space background.

You have to use a background where the lighting and perspective make sense so it looks real. I get lots of complements for my background because people think it's real and they think I have a nicely decorated office. Also helps if your software isn't trash and blurs/bleeds edges around your head

likehelpful

I think teams is absolute trash. But you can also download SnapCam and use that as a virtual camera and it's excellent so the platform doesn't really matter.

It makes me wonder what the person is hiding. Seeing people in their natural environment is brings a level of authenticity and builds empathy. It can increase connection as you discover things about each other that wouldn’t have come up otherwise. It can build trust. I say, be thoughtful about your home background and go with that.

Thank you for sharing this point of view.

I’m not a top exec or anything but IMO they do look tacky

like

I never use a virtual background, too lazy to set that up. For Christ sake we are in a Pandemic. I’m not in the mood to care about how my background looks. Plus my apartment is cute so y’all are gonna see it 🤣

Right??? I put a lot of time and money into this mcm/boho thing y’all wish you could accomplish. You’re GOING to admire it.

None of the folks on our Executive Team use virtual backgrounds. That said I probably wouldn’t either if my backgrounds were a personal home gym in SF, a 2000 sq ft craft room, or a peloton in my bedroom with a $20K art piece.

like

Yes! None of our partners or client execs on our calls use virtual backgrounds. It’s just an interesting observation.

I largely find it a distraction, even when not of something off the wall or goofy.

I do have a few coworkers who use those default backgrounds that are pretty tacky. Especially that video of the palm tree at the beach 🤣

Disagree. I use a background of my company’s HQ office and it looks professional. People even comment that they at first thought I was in the office. I think it just depends on the background u use

like

it does depend, I’ve gotten the same comment

Living in Texas allows me to afford such nice office in my house. Ya’ll think I would replace such a beautiful expensive looking background with a tacky blur? No way jose Executive presence comes automatically if you have such rich hard-wood bookshelf background 😎

Thank you M3, now I too will look like I live in Texas with a fancy office when I use this photo to as my zoom background going forward

likefunny

It depends on the background and your presence. If you move your head a lot the background might impose itself over parts of your head which is pretty distracting

Yea does anyone really care about your background?

like

Apparently people do.

I use a ring light. It makes me look more rested than I am

Can you suggest a good one?

Virtual backgrounds look tacky, invest in some decent lighting, audio gear and a 4K camera. Make sure the backdrop looks good and you’re golden.

likefunny

A clean white wall is better than a virtual background. Generally go with A.V.L. (Audio, Video & Lighting) in that order before anything else. A bookshelf can make all the difference 🤷🏼‍♂️

like

I use my same backdrop and ring light I use for YouTube videos. 😂

This is what I use. It was on sale at one point for about $50, but that was last year. It has increased, but is definitely worth it if you plan to use it for YouTube and vlogging at home. For those who want to do makeup tutorials up close, I would get the smaller version.

No one is looking at my background. Their focus is on me ;0)

Blurred background for me. It's the perfect balance.

I don't care what background someone has, blur, virtual, real. I always think the people with a fake virtual of their work environment are trying too hard to make things look normal. But if it makes them feel better, that's great. Some of our corporate broadcasts use a horrible virtual background. Those are a pathetic attempt to make things seem normal. Personally, I bought a good camera and either a blur or a photo out the window behind me.

Does anyone have any insight as to when things are going to go “back to normal” in California in terms of needing to appear in person for smaller status conferences, hearings, depositions, etc. instead of doing it via zoom? I am permanently remote but a lot of my cases are in courts that are a good 1.5-2 hour drive from me and I’m starting to feel anxious about when I’ll have to start going in person for these types of things because of the distance.
