Had discussions with Big D, PwC, EY, KPMG. Interviewed with McKinsey, Alix Partners. Had 3-4 industry interviews. And not one offer.
Thinking lack of industry offers are due to my pay being much higher than most.
Consulting lack of offers are likely due to being in industry for over 15 years before switching to where I currently reside. It’s frustrating especially when you don’t feel like there is any career path available where you work. Also, being told that firms need people with real world experience while they also say I don’t have the right consulting experience is a bit of double speak, IMHO.
Any advice and/or suggestions? I’ve been told that I don’t have traditional consulting experience because of the boutique firm for which I work, is that really true?
I honestly don’t know if what I’m being told is total BS or truthful.
How ooh have you been in consulting? Hard to say if you are getting BS or not without much more detail. Happy to connect and share thoughts. I joined consulting after 10+years in industry at the C level at 36 and have made a very successful career here so I do believe it is possible.
Appreciate the response, ZS1. I’ll send you a private message. I am sure much of what I do is not the traditional type of consulting - it’s more claims and advisory - I’d rather not say the industry or discipline. I’ve been doing this for 3 years. Since it is a bit different, and I only have 3 years “experience,” that could be why I’ve not had many bites to date. It is why I had thought Alix Partners would have been a great fit.
Also, I’m looking at the equivalent of a Director level for comp and responsibilities, so a Partner has to stick his neck out to vouch for me. Another potential issue is living in a tier 3 city. Many of these firms claim to offer positions to anyone, anywhere in the lower 48, but that is likely hurting my chances.
I have offered to travel anywhere needed to exceed work expectations, but I’m still searching.
Might be a matter of matching your skills with the demand and priority of each firm. I made the switch to multiple firms because it was the skills that they needed.
