I’m in a different industry but started asking myself the same question. Some points that stuck out to me as I considered this: -I never sought out anything related to my work after hours. Not even tangentially related. I always defaulted to other subjects when reading or looking into things on YouTube. I’m always curious but never about my industry. -I tried running through a list of alternate legal jobs I could do and all of them seemed like they were “the lesser evil” types of positions. So it became clear another lateral job wasn’t going to end up being any better. -I didn’t aspire to anything in my profession. As I looked around at the more senior attorneys, no one had done anything that I wanted to accomplish. So why try following in their footsteps? I’ve since determined to stop pursuing my current profession and go into a totally different sector. The clarity the above questions gave me made it easier to make that decision. I’m not sure my current thing is “the right thing.” But it satisfies other drives I have and it’s different than what I was doing. I consider it an exploration of something new with the potential that I’ll really enjoy it or, in the alternative, at least learn a lot and develop new professional skill sets. It’s not just a time filler but something that I’ll benefit from. So it doesn’t feel as risky. FWIW, I’m almost 40 and have a family.

Thank you for the reply. Sorry I haven't had a chance to check this in a while hence the delay. This really resonated with me because like you, I don't really seek out anything industry related for me. I follow a few groups on Reddit and Facebook semi related but only because I know I need to keep up in tech. But I don't enjoy it. Like not at all. I would love to pursue something else. Actually I'd love to start my own small business like you but financially (student loans) makes it impossible. I think I just need to stick it out for a couple more years. But you've given me so much clarity. Thank you so much

Ask yourself: which activities at work make you more fulfilled, leverage your strengths? If you’re struggling with the answer, then the job is a bad fit.

I feel the same. I thought I was in the right career because I love coding but now that I’m here, it feels weird. My coworkers aren’t bad people but just not ones I can work with. It feels conflicting. I *think* I want to be my own boss but have no idea what to do.

I would love to be my own boss but have no idea what I want to do either. I just know I want to do something with my hands. I considered opening a bakery or selling candles or selling my own skincare items or something like that but doubt my skills as those are just hobbies right now. Haven't had much time to work on those either due to work.

Maybe both - talk to the person who does staffing at your firm and see if you can get into some different industry projects

I'm currently talking to Huron for a role. Should I stop...?

likefunny

Hi! Sorry for the delay. Huron itself isn't actually bad. They're decent but like PMM1 said everyone is different. I know some people who absolutely hate it here but also some people who have been here 17+ years or however insanely long and love it. At it's core I think it's your team dynamics that'll make you love it or hate it more than anything else. So definitely ask about that. Huron is huge and has a bunch of practices comprised of smaller teams. For the most part I do love my team 99% of the time.

Actually it is now 10 years for me and I feel the same way for the last couple of years. People makes you frustrated about the job you love, as long as the company allows them to. I have been looking for jobs even I had interview with Amazon two times for manager roles but could make it yet, I will keep on looking!

What’s worse - not making the change due to being paralyzed with fear and living with regret or making the change and realizing it wasn’t for you and making a boomerang back but with the knowledge of what’s on the other side?
