What do you mean ‘given’? You typically apply for a role in those fields, it’s not given to you. I’ve seen a good mix of M/F in these roles from my experience.
Thanks for explaining!
That hasn’t been my experience. I’ve always had lead roles and managed my accounts. At my last ad agency, I was selected for the agency “Brain Team” by the (female) agency GM. And, I was chosen above the two male CDs and male ACD to be on that pitch team for the agency. I was also the sole writer on their $45M account - the largest one in the agency.
I’ve always - starting on my first day as a copywriter
- been the designated writer on my accounts. All my promotions were merit based. There have been times where I’ve been “hit on” or had inappropriate things said to me, but it’s never affected my work assignments or career.
I can definitely relate PT! While I run my own consultancy (primarily of one), all seems great and my work is more valid when potential clients assume "C" is the first initial of a male's name. The constant weight of being doubted is exhausting. I'm sure a lot of other women in this bowl can relate to your scenario. For me, the silver lining can always be found when you can prove people who underestimated you wrong. Hope it gets better for you!
Yes, definitely true in my experience. Very tired of being put on the “female” accounts even when my experience and skills set is better suited to another, or on the BTL projects the dudes don’t want to work on. I feel like I spend 90% of my time and energy on the job claiming my space and reminding people why I deserve to be here and it’s exhaaauuusting (also a WOC)
Not personally but I’ve seen it happen. I believe it goes beyond “gender” per say (but is related) - it’s about how well you jive and network with men. Or how you’re perceived by men specifically. They’re thinking, “will she be respected by our bro-y client?” Whether they’re right or wrong doesn’t matter; it’s just how they think.
