Being asked to “copy edit and proofread to save on proofreader time and cost.” Happy to do it, just unsure that my eyes should be the last on a pitch. Am I wrong?

Reviewing your own work is risky. Let the copy editor/proofreader be responsible for errors and maintaining consistency. There is so much more to editing than scanning for typos. Seems worth the few minutes it takes for a professional to review and ensure accuracy.

Is there anyone on the account team you trust to catch your mistakes? I’ve always had some sharp ones. Just ask them on the side to keep their eyes out for anything, but don’t let there be anything. Helps to print out decks or export to pdf. (Idk why but it does) then read it over a good 3 times.

You’re not wrong, but it’s common. Just don’t make mistakes and have someone on the lookout in case you do

I wouldn’t be happy about it. I don’t like being the one responsible for discovering and correcting errors, especially because they’re more difficult to see in your own work. If it’s an error you made because you don’t know it’s wrong, you won’t be able to correct it even if you re-read a hundred times. And it’s just generally harder to see typos you made yourself, because what you see on the page is what you expect to be there as much as what actually is there.

Step up and do it but suggest as someone just said that an account team person look at it after you do

As a CD I have had to proofread almost everything. The only time I balked and refused to proofread a doc was for a pharma agency. I found a glaring mistake but the account team wouldn’t let me correct it because they said that particular phase had already been Approved earlier by regulatory.

So if I couldn’t make any changes why the hell should I read it

I feel the same way. I understand the need to fine-tune all work, I think it's always best to have multiple eyes on each project.

Not wrong. Especially if you’re the one who wrote it. If this is case, you need to put it aside for a few hours and clear your head before proofing. I also find that printing it out helps me catch things

Aren’t you a writer? I don’t get why that’s a problem.

It’s not. There is no problem. I asked if I was wrong in assuming that my eyes shouldn’t be the last to look

False economy: acting for one's short-term savings when those actions assure much greater costs in the future:
"Yes, ma'am...what's that? Last season's logo? For a different product? And yes, although spellcheck assured us that "patent" is spelled correctly, we are aware that your drug is not administered to intellectual property rights..."

I believe in myself

FCB, that's great. However, "familiarity blindness" and multiple creative takes on a job mean that your self-faith may not be justified. Remember: everything your editor catches, your client never sees : )

Definitely not wrong.

Hey friends,
I have no experience in copywriting or advertising but I have an interest in becoming a copywriter. I’ve been working to make this move for about six months, which included a few summer classes in graphic design (mostly Adobe CC) and a lot of reading in my down time. I cannot afford portfolio school right now. Would it be beneficial for me to start a blog at least to show I am capable of writing? Thank you!
