Best advice you’d give to a young associate...

Don’t be afraid to make big moves (that put your interests first). Always remember that to the corporate machine you are just a number and easily replaceable so don’t feel guilty about putting yourself first (no one else will!).

I forgot the critical “take care of yourself” guidance. Set a sleep schedule that suits you and stick to it. Exercise most days, preferably at a time and place you will be accountable for, like a class you have to pay for even if you miss. Eat regularly and healthy. Weigh yourself every morning and if you’re weigh changes deal with it before the change snowballs. If you’re prone to anxiety, depression or another mental illness, find a therapist and a psychiatrist you like and trust and who is convenient to visit either regularly or as needed. Follow their advice. Find a good internist who isn’t more than 10 years older than you, so you can stick with him or her for a long time, and whose office isn’t far from where you live or work. Get annual checkups and regular blood work. The demands of our jobs can do weird things to your health. Being proactive can make you feel better, be more productive, and get problems fixed faster and with fewer repercussions.

Work hard.
Work SMART.
Don't be afraid to ask for clarification of assignments and expectations.
STICK UP FOR YOURSELF. Even bully partners will respect you for it.
Have character. By this I mean, take ownership of your own mistakes, don't throw other people under the bus, treat everyone with respect, etc. Basically, don't be a douchebag.
Take care of your health. You may not realize it, but being relatively fit and eating relatively healthy will help your mind function better.
Harness the power of alcohol at networking opportunities.
In general, be talktative and friendly. You never know who you will meet and where. To this day, I regularly get referrals in from a dude who I met ONCE, like 10 years ago, at a bar event.
Don't burn bridges.
Find a sponsor (by this I mean a senior partner who will champion you and your career).
Don't sleep with coworkers or staff members. Horrible idea.
Don't fart in your office. You don't know when someone important might walk in..

Your confidence will gain with experience and almost no mistake isn’t fixable so try to relax.

I second this. Short of missing a statutory deadline, pretty much everything can be fixed to a point.

1. Operate with integrity from the beginning- it’s really inconvenient at times, but in the long run it’s infinitely better for there to be no doubt about your honesty.
2. Find your balance. It’s perfectly ok to pull some all-nighters and it should also be ok to not check your email for a weekend sometimes.
3. This kind of falls into 2, but there’s a difference between “self care” and just not working hard enough. Take care of yourself, but remember nobody got where they wanted to be without hard work and sacrifice (within reason, of course).
4. Always be kind. “Nice” is letting people run you over. “Kind” is being forgiving and understanding when someone makes a mistake or not taking advantage of every single opportunity to screw someone else over.

Ask lots of questions. Everything is an opportunity to learn, and the best associates are the ones with curiosity.

Find someone smarter and more experienced than you that you feel comfortable with - an easy going partner or more senior associate. While the good folks rightly believe that there are no stupid questions, knowing there’s someone you can ask the seemingly dumb things too will make you feel more comfortable doing so.

Brokerages & ESG - All right money people, somebody help me out. I’m not interested on having ESG score. It’s not that I don’t necessarily care about such things, but I really chief at the idea of having some score imposed upon me. Does anybody know of a good low fee brokerage that I could move six or $700,000 worth of assets to that isn’t going to chastise my investing choices?. Thanks in advance
