You need a few more criteria other than kids and warm (does that mean never snows or get over 90 consistently). I've lived a bunch of places, the west is the best. The suburbs of LA and Texas cities have warm weather and good schools but I would kill myself if I had to sit in that much traffic. Texas. Texas also had very little outdoor recreation options relative to the west coast. The food in most Texas suburbs and cities pretty poor and with fewer options than comparable cities. There are a bunch of good mid sized southern cities with warm weather and low cost of living, I like Raleigh the best, but again their outdoor activities are limited and humidity can be a problem. The food is also much worse than NYC. Salt Lake is very nice and easy to raise a family in with great recreation options but it does get cold. Portland and Seattle have the recreation options of salt lake, slightly worse schools, better food, warmer winters but it never really gets hot in the summer. You can find very warm weather in the Bay area and good schools but it is very expensive. Obviously from this list I don't know the Midwest or Northeast as well but I don't know if you can avoid the cold weather anywhere in those regions.

@A3 you can definitely get good food in Houston, anyplace with enough money will attract enough high end chefs to ensure you can get good food. When I say that a city has good or great food, I mean that there are a wide variety of cuisine, executed at a high level at all price points. The food that people go to get everyday is outstanding, varied and innovative. In NYC and LA you get great Korean, Indian, various Chinese cuisines, pizza, Italian, seafood, ...., etc from $5-$500 per plate. Houston has some great food but it also certainly is concentrated in a few styles.

Don’t leave NYC. Certain stigma with staying and raising a family in nyc that other cities don’t have.

We moved from NY to San Diego. Absolutely hated it at first but after having a baby, we’re glad we did it. San Diego’s an easy city to live in. Obviously the weather but also great healthcare, new hospitals, my commute went from 45-90 minutes on the whim of the N train, to 12 minutes. Daycare wait lists were shorter, real estate is more reasonable than NY or SF, just everything is easier. We might move back when he’s older because I’m not crazy about the laid back surfer culture but for now it works.

How frequently should one expect or advocate for a raise at a small firm? I moved to a new firm (about ten lawyers) about two and a half years ago. After my first year I got a 20% raise following a brief and exclusively positive performance review. Its been about 17 months since then and silence. I have the general sense that the firm struggled a little financially during COVID and I don't want to seem ungrateful or greedy, but apparently the firm is doing well enough to hire more associates.
