Best company/role/function if I only want to work 20-25 hours a week? Life should be lived and I work too much. Want to cut back and reorder my priorities.

Contractors have a lot of control of the hours they work every week and still get to contribute in a meaningful way. You can freelance (taxes/healthcare will suck) or go through a contractor company. I find that designer and engineering roles do well in these positions. I have not heard of a lot of companies who have part time positions for the tech teams

I agree that you may have to become a contractor. There's a serious reduction in benefits (i.e. usually zero benefits), but if you do it right, you'll get your life back and have a lot more control over what work you accept and what you don't. Of course, done wrong, you'll end up working twice the hours for half the pay because "this one is just temporary." Been there, done that...

There can be a lot of unpaid gaps between projects if you work without an employment contract. Sometimes, that leads to accepting sub-par offers to fill those gaps - offers that you wouldn't normally accept. It really comes down to if you can accept the breaks as welcome time off or if you start to panic and go into "accept anything" mode. I know way too many people who end up falling into the latter category.

I work more than 40 hours... any tips on making that 20-25?

At large companies sometimes there’s the option to go to 60% or 80%, but that comes at a large salary sacrifice

When I worked in bizz intelligence/bie I could probably get away with 30 to 40 hours of work per week

I was extremely burnt out at my last FTE and jumped at a contract role thru an agency, I worked 40 hrs but it was far less stressful, the work was so easy and was able to look for permanent jobs in meantime. There aren’t really any contracts where you’d work less than 40, most teams need 40 hrs. I got the contract because the team I got placed with was extremely understaffed but couldn’t get FTEs since most of their team was on leave. The team will assign the easy repetitive work to the contractor so the FTEs could spend more time on the complex stuff and working weekends. I really liked the company so I ended up getting a full time role on a different team. I’m so much happier than where I was 6-7 months ago. If you do contract, find out why are they needing a contractor. If someone’s out on leave that’s a good reason because you can just have a 3-6 month commitment and move on to something else. The good thing about contractors is the team won’t make you work over 40 hrs because OT is so expensive for them to pay you. You don’t get paid holidays or vacation but the plus side of unpaid time is no one bothers you on vacation, weekends or make you work on holidays. If there are personal motivation for quitting your job such as physical/mental health it may make more sense to quit and focus full time on recovery first. If you haven’t taken any vacation and burnt you should aim to use all available PTO in the year to prevent burnout from working too much. There aren’t too many PT jobs. If young kids are factor for reducing hours, I’d try 100% WFH first.

I agree that consulting is the right direction to go, as long as you are aware of the downsides when it comes to benefits. You have to be able to self-start and find clients but honestly if you wanna work to live instead of live to work, it's a good option.

Some kind of consulting/contracting but you have to be able to sell as a service that is worth enough to make up for whatever your income is as well as all the costs associated, and the loss of benefits. That can be tough!

As others have mentioned, finding part time is difficult. It's much easier to do something like work 6 months 40 hrs a week, then have a few months off. Taxes and insurance a pain initially, but not bad once you get used to them. Also, be careful about being in situations where everyone else on the team is working over 40 hrs a week. You may need to keep up, but expected to only bill 40/week. Contractors are often the fall guys used by management when things go wrong. They can be used to conveniently shift blame. Managers may expect miracles from the contractors, and that can blow up on you. They see a nice-looking resume and think you can rescue their crappy system and dysfunctional organization.
