Omnicom has a veteran rotation program
I think they should start with the agencies who are known to work with the armed forces. They might be most inclined to hire Vets for any reason (probably optics to clients). I know JWT has the marines (in ATL though) and I think McCann has one of the other services - so might be worth starting there
Y&R in Memphis handles Navy. Side note - I was a 30 year old creative intern. Tell him to keep his chin up. NYC can be brutal but all it takes is a casual conversation. He can always email a CD (if he’s creative), the recruiter/talent person, or almost anyone and ask for an informational coffee chat. It’s amazing what sparks from those talks.
I got my first internship at 35. I didn’t bring up my age once. I had a career before advertising too. Tell him to go back through his resume and drop off dates. Drop anything that would age him to someone who hasn’t met him. (He shouldn’t have his HS on there at this point.) The only thing he should be sending to recruiters is his book link and whatever the internship application required. It’s illegal for them to ask about age BTW.
Tons of people younger than him, or his age with bigger titles have no idea what they're doing. Work hard and he'll get noticed.
What does he want to do? Account, Creative, Strategy, etc?
Shops that are not on the coast are more open to bring veterans and older talent. Try CHI/MN
Look outside of agencies. JPMorgan has a huge initiative to hire vets
Reach out to FCB Chicago there are several veterans employed and they are very supportive.
Media internships at the big agencies are more of a summer thing, typically start the interview process around April timing
MD1 he wants to work on the strategy and comms planning side eventually so he is trying to find an internship in that area
OP, media strategy or creative strategy? Want to assume media given your spot and the tie to comms planning but also don’t want to assume at all :-)
MD1 media strategy :)
Enroll in BUDS training and become a SEAL.
I worked at OMD with a veteran once..
Age doesn’t matter
