Best IRA to roll over my 401k into? And why?

Is it Roth 401k or Traditional. Rolling over into an IRA gives you more control over your money, instead of relying on your next employers 401k options. I recommend Vanguard.

PwC charges a flat fee less than $100 per year after you leave and do not rollover 401K. I think its going to be hard to beat that in terms of expenses form Vanguard etc. But curious to hear what’s the minimum you can get.

Are you leaving your firm or have you already left? Do you have an option to keep your funds in the current 401k plan?

Why are you rolling your 401k into an IRA instead into your next employer ?

D1- have already left and do have the option of keeping them as well..

SM1 - I'm looking at that option as well. Do you see benefits of rolling over to my next employer instead of an IRA?

Only rollover to your next employer if you prefer the fund options available or they’ve negotiated lower expense ratios (unlikely) than say Vanguard’s admiral funds for Total US Stock (VTSAX @ .04%) + International Stock (VTIAX @ .11%). Both of these funds require $10k minimum. What is your desired Stock (US/International) + Bond allocation?

You can focus your Stock split externally in your IRA/Taxable accounts, and use your 401k to adjust your bond diversification as you age

You will pay lower admin costs in general leaving with an employer or rolling it into your next ones. I may leave my 401k at accenture until I retire even though I left because the fees are ridiculously lower than you can ever get on your own

I just triggered a TRowe employer sponsored 401K to my Accenture account. It’s a difference of 0.4% to 0.06%. That’s 150K+ in expense savings apparently my retirement based on current balance. Check your expense and transfer policy before assuming a backdoor iRA is the right approach

Not try SM - many employers start charging an admin fee after you leave. Vanguard IRA is the way to go

I think the main point is that for your given situation you should compare the expenses and fees of different scenarios and then choose - like any other decision

I suppose those of us in finance at big employers have to preclear personal trading/investment. Couple questions: 1. What’s your holding period? ie if I buy something then I can’t sell it for profit after 60 days (looks like cutting loss before 60 days is fine) 2. Is there a way to automate our investments to any extent? Every month my 401k contribution is automatically invested in firm-approved funds but I haven’t set up my brokerage account to do the same due to preclearance
