Best New York bar prep course to take? Barbri or Themis? ( I am not from the USA, but from a common law jurisdiction)

Barbri and Critical Pass flash cards.

like

I don’t have family supporting me and was working at a restaurant. I used two twenty dollar books off Amazon, every test from the past 20 years, and critical pass cards. Cost me about 300 including printing and Uber’s to fedex.

I passed on the first try.

like

Sometimes you have no choice.

Barbri and do the full course. The reason: if barbri messes up teaching a topic and 60% of the people do barbri, you ride the curve.

like

Fully agree with the above. You can also get AdaptiBar if you wanted additional MBE questions. Stay away from Kaplan.

like

If you’re paying for it yourself, do Themis. I did about 90% of the course, didn’t stress myself out like my friends trying to finish all the Barbri course work and passed with lots of room to spare. I negotiated with Themis and paid the public interest rate that they advertise. (They refused to give me the free iPad that they gave out at that time... but I did ask shamelessly.) I heard Themis and Barbri will both lower their rates if you ask (depending on timing). Exercise those negotiating skills now! You have nothing to lose by asking.

Thanks! I’m from Canada so I don’t have a rep- can you give me bob’s contact info if you don’t mind ?

Themis. Less expensive but not a "cheap" course. I did 90% of my course for NY and NJ (when that was a thing before the UBE) and passed both on the first try.

like

Themis combined with Adaptibar worked well for me.

like

I've heard about Adaptibar too! Is it truly so helpful? Does it help in preparing for it while covering everything and in a "shorter" time period? Has anybody ever heard of Studicata? I've been watching some of their videos on YouTube

I’ve taken both (for different states) and found Themis MUCH more helpful

like

100% satisfied with BarMax. studied 30% less than classmates who were stressed out on Barbri and I passed with more confidence and a higher score. No BS, to the point.

like

I liked barbri. Also added Adaptibar for the plethora of MBE questions. Passed easily just following the barbri schedule and doing additional MBE questions.

This is the move although I only studied for 2 weeks (I’m licensed elsewhere) and passed with flying colors.

like

Are you paying for it yourself? There’s 0 reason to pay for Barbri if so. Do Themis

Yes 😭

Themis was great.

Kaplan (although you didn’t ask)

“Strategist” seems like a rare title to see when you go in house. Are there similar roles with different titles - I could be wrong, but I don’t think it’s an agency exclusive role.

Accepted an offer of employment with a mid-sized firm to begin in a couple of months. I’ve always wanted to shoot for big law but haven’t had the opportunity thus far. Overall, I accepted because I didn’t want to take the opportunity for granted in addition to the uncertainty with hiring due to covid. Would it be an issue to shoot for a big law opportunity in the interim? I know how this looks and sounds, so I definitely don’t want to set a precedent that I deal in bad faith.
