You can’t just put a large sum into 401k — there are yearly limits

I don’t think 401ks work like you think they do…

- Form an LLC, designate as S-Corp - Contribute to your SEP IRA up to $58k (rules apply)

You can open a standard investment fund and put it at an index of the market. Market risk is the same as everyone else is willing to take. You can’t just drop money into your 401k. That’s not how the rules for it work. That said, you haven’t given us much to go on. What’s the source, what’s the value, what’s the timeline, how do you think about risk, what level growth are you looking for? All of that matters.

Safe is something like a HYSA or CDs. After that there are varying degrees of risk.

Your 401k returns are not guaranteed and can easily drop below your YOY goals too btw. The last few years have been great returns for anybody with half a brain in the stock market.

How long until you need the money

Pump it across a few index funds

Put it in an S&P 500 index fund like IVV and Nasdaq 100 index fund like QQQ. If you’re conservative, you can put a little bit in bonds too. And can dollar cost average into the indexes.

To put into 401k you need to do it via payroll deduction and it can't exceed something like $54k a year - $19.5k can go to traditional or Roth, then add employer matching contribution, then the rest can go to after tax. If you're married and your spouse works, they can do the same. You can put money into a 529 for your kids' education. No limit on contributions there, I don't think. Beyond that, just park it in a taxable brokerage, in some moderately aggressive mutual fund or something

Thanks. I understand investing and that is why I stick with it. You are correct, I don’t understand gambling very well and stay away

Looking to hear opinions on Roth vs Traditional IRA and 401ks. I have Roth for both, max out my IRA and contribute to my 401k. I started work last August so did Roth due to low tax bracket from only working part of the year. Now making 70k and wondering if I should convert one or both to traditional

I’m looking for assistance on building your own portfolio in my traditional 401K. I’ve been reading that it’s important to choose funds with low expense ratios. Also, that it is recommended to have at least one US stock, international stock , and bond. I am 24yo so ideally, I’d want to allocate 90%-100% to stocks and 0%-10% to the bond. Any other things I should be looking at?

Have been pinged for a possible role as Director of Operations at a promising looking startup with a 50%% pay increase & equity. It looks like an amazing opportunity.. but my husband and I have just started trying for our first kid, and I'm not sure about leaving the stability and benefits of Big 4, even though I feel like I have run out of career growth here. Has anyone changed jobs at a similar point, or worked at a startup as a new mom, that might be able to share perspective or opinions?

Hi everyone 🎅! I'm looking to join online communities (like this one) for people in customer success. Particularly Slack groups. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

I live alone and have loved the time not traveling but WFH has really started getting to me the past few weeks. On top of that, I got a series of bad news this week that really took a toll on my mental health (one has affected my ability to visit family), and I’ve never felt this alone in my life. I miss having an office to go to and see others in. Even started skipping workouts & cooking, both of which I love. Could use hugs and inspiration to get past this hump

I am almost 2 years into my H1B. They haven’t started my I140 but when I joined told me that I would be eligible in a year of which I am coming up on in this Oct. I got a new offer today but they told me that they would apply I140 after a year from when I join. The pros of the new one is TC more than 18k with sign-on of 15k (not sure clauses for this) and better wrk-life bal). My question is, how long into H1B is it advisable to have an I140 applied for. Would 3-4 years into my H1B be too late?
