Are you including suburbs? Or do you want to be in the city?
Suburbs would be great!
I am open for anywhere really since I don’t know much about the area.
Buying or renting? General budget? Kids school age? Most searches start based on schools. There are many good public school districts in the suburbs. Of course real estate in areas with the best schools is higher priced. The next big factor is commute. Where are you working? Are you planning to drive or take the train?
Lincoln Park, Lake View, Roscoe Village.
I grew up in Long Grove. train stations in town to union and really great school district.

Budget?
800-900k
Definitely consider the La Grange and Western Springs area. You definitely get bang for buck out there in terms of space/schools/shopping. At the same time, you're close enough to the city where you can easily train or drive into city so you don't have to spend your life in commute.
OP I think you first need to make a determination of whether you want your kids raised city or suburban. I personally want to raise in the city for the diversity. This will really shape your lifestyle.
